I just purchased a new Hitachi 7k60 7200 RPM drive for my zd8000.

The drive that came with my new zd8000 was the Seagate Momentus 5400.2.

Using the program CASPER XP, I made an exact duplicate of my Seagate Drive contents on the new Hitachi 7k60 7200 RPM drive.

Next I turned of the zd8000 and boot from a cold boot. The exact seconds to boot to the windows XP desktop and load all system tray icons was 108 seconds with the seagate 5400 drive.

Next I removed the drive and installed the exact copy Hitachi 7200 RPM drive. The results were astonishing, the boot time to the windows desktop with all system tray icons loaded was 106 to 111 seconds (several tests).

THe hitachi 7200 RPM Drive does not load windows XP professional any faster than the 5400 drive

3DMark2005 with the new 7200 RPM drive produced exactly the same score of 1620.

Actually, I remember reading that there were some tests where the 5400 drive actually beat the 7200 in things like read speed... great post! It'd be nice if you could run some actual benchmarks--read speed and the likes, rather than potentially skewed results like "time until desktop."

just ran a test that measures max disk speed. Not sure if it is read or write speed. The test just has a MAX DISK SPEED result. The 7200 was 44200 kb/per sec, the 5400 drive was 35991 kb/per sec

Judging from thr results the 7200 rpm drive is not worth the $190.00 I paid for it. (Plus 30 overnight shipping)

Well... your 7200 will move at something like 38MB/s normally... the 5400RPM will move at around 33MB/s IIRC.... There was a big review website that did benchmarks on this along time ago...

The faster causes more heat in an already hot laptop (decreases life) & uses more battery power... Those are the downsides... The up is you boot faster...

Either way you have a ton of stuff loaded on your laptop to make it take that long... My system isnt as good and it boots/loads windows in less than 10 sec.
