hi, i searched really hard how this but still couldnt find the solution so i regristered and made a new thread :headbang: lol
ok heres whats going on.....
i just got a 700m off ebay and its brand new (well it sure looked like it) then after using it for a few days, i noticed a faint white grey-ish vertical bar (about 2.6 cm wide) on the display, and its really noticible when its displaying black or really dark colours, like the default windows loading screen.
is this a defective monitor or is there a way i can fix it?
thank

Plug in your laptop with an external screen like a monitor or tv to see if the vertical bar exists there as well. If you see the line there you have a defective video card. If you do not its either the Flex cable thats connecting to the LCD screen or the LCD screen itself.
Your options? Well I hope the guy you bought it from still has warrenty on the machine since dell will likely charger you quite a bit of change for a new screen. Another option? Well if it turns out its just the flex cable then you can buy one from dell spare parts and replace it yourself unless you dont feel like taking apart the laptop (it sno easy task). In fact sending in the unit dell can determine what needs to be fixed and charge you for the labor and part cost so if its the cable then your looking at under $100 to fix the machine assuming you dont have warrenty.

Perhaps the cable isn't connected fully? You know how when a monitor cable isn't connected properly? Maybe the display ribbon cable is similarly misconnected inside the lappy.

This could also be true unfortunetly the 700m is incredibly difficult to take apart as opposed to the cake walk of the 8600 or the 9300.

Could it possibly be a driver issue? Use Driver Cleaner Pro to uninstall the old drivers and reinstall new ones. Otherwise you have a bad screen or card.

thanks for all the reply guys, I think im gonna just send the unit back to dell (less hassle), but first I have to wait for the transfer of the ownership (usually a week or 2 right?)

Transfer ownership takes no longer than 24 hours but can be done as quick as 10 minutes so its really up to the guy who sold it to you to decide if he wants to be quick about it.

I've had my notebook for a while now, and I get this from time to time as well. I was told, by many people, that it is LCD burn it, the results of leaving my screen on too long, without a screensaver, and having the generic start menu(I disabled themes). That, grey bar, is most likely your task bar in windows, burned into the screen.
Not permanent or very serious, but a pain in the ass regardless.
Oh yeah, if you want to fix it, set your laptop screen on a dark black background for a couple of hours, and don't turn the screen off. Then turn it off AFTER a few hours, fire it back up, and watch the right hand corner. At best, you will see a minor mark on the side, about the size of the end of the taskbar, where the clock is, or nothing at all.
G'luck.

A vertical task bar? Possible, but unlikely.
