Here are my impressions of the Tecra M2 in the last year that I have had it.
Tecra M2
Intel® Pentium® M Processor 745 (1.80GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 400MHz FSB)
1536 MB DDR P2700 RAM (I upgraded +512 RAM later on)
NVIDIA® graphics w/64MB
60 GB HDD (4200 RPM)
DVD/CR-RW
First the positives:
-The size and weight of this laptop are quite impressive. I found it quite easy to tote around with me in college.
-The fit and finish of the laptop is also quite desirable. It does not have the flashy look of Sony and Dell, and but not quite as subtle as an IBM.
-The notebook is incredibly fast, even with the stock 1024MB Ram configuration. Even with Norton Internet Security 2005 and SystemWorks running in the background, AIM, Windows Media, and Word/One Note all running, the computer does not bog down.
-The One Note program is great for anyone trying to record lectures/take notes in college.
-There have been no dead pixels to date, even though the computer has been dropped twice.
All in all, this machine has been a good for college use. However, the performance becomes PERFECT in all aspects if the computer is undervolted. Read on because most of the negative factors of this computer are forgotten after it has been undervolted.
Negatives:
- The fan noise. The M2 ran quite loud and the fan would turn on nealy every minute. That is quite a negative when you are trying to record lectures and the fan noise overwhelms the microphone on occasion.
-The computer became overly hot, and bogged sometimes even when running small processes.
-The magnesium case is very easily scratched.
Since I have undervolted, however: The fan noise is almost non-existent even when running hardcore programs, and the computer runs much cooler.
This has been my best toshiba notebook (I have owned 4), but has had its share of problems, all of which I have resolved:
Here are the numbers BEFORE UNDERVOLTING:
CPU/Speed/Memory: 7/10
Fan Noise: 7/10
Price: 10/10
Overall Value: 8.5/10
AFTER UNDERVOLTING
CPU/Speed/Memory: 10/10
Fan Noise: 9.5/10
Price: 10/10
Overall Value: 10/10
I really feel like this laptop is perfect, and the only thing I would prefer over this laptop would be an IBM X40 Thinkpad (3.5lbs) with the same specs and a 128mb graphics card.
