Ok, I own a Dell XPS Gen 3 Desktop and at purchase I got it with the Windows xp home edition just to save the $100 dollars. At home I have copied versions (from original disc) of xp media edition and also xp pro, both tested and working fine on other systems.
Everytime I try to reformat my machine and update the os to a better and more efficient pro or media version everything goes fine at the beginning: boot from disc, delete partition, make new partition, format to ntfs, and when the windows disc tries to extract its content for install to the drive it gives an error "no harddrive can be found" // when I do the same exact procedure with my original dell disc, it works fine. Now I am really only trying to save me time getting the original disc from my brother who lives 2 hrs drive away from me ... does dell have some type of protection disabling me to install the OS from another media than what came with the machine? and how would this block work since the whole storage has been partitioned.
Thanks for the help!
