Go with the Acer, it is a very nice set of specs and looks real good as well.

My old Compaq, well it was just over a year old, died on me, the screen went bad.

I just ordered a Gateway.

The Compaq was out of warranty.

Acer notebooks are the old Texas Insturments brand, they made good solid notebooks.

eheh opinions are good. On the real though, as with everything it's always about opportunity cost. What will you lose out on with the Acer if you choose the Compaq? What will you lose out on with the Compaq if you choose Acer? This should be the guiding decision behind your purchase as with any business decision you make. I personally don't own either of the laptops you mentioned, but I know from reading dozens upon dozens of reviews that people love the X1000. So that's my suggestion. The acer is harder to find reviews about. So one aspect of the opportunity cost would be the risk of buying a product without finding numerous reviews to make an informed decision. Doing computer purchase opportunity costs based upon strictly specifications means little.
