Ok..here is the deal.
My new 8600 from dell had some brightness issues on the far right side, but no dead pixels. I figured it was worth the gamble to get the brightness better, so I had them replace it.
Now the brightness is "good", but I've found 3 dead pixels. Is 3 over their threshold? Should I have them replace it again?

I'm also having similar issues (with the right side being darker than the rest of the screen) you can really see it when you lower the brightness level. What screen did they replace it with (I currently have a Sharp WUXGA)? Was the replacement a WUXGA? (and still as Sharp one?) How do the colours and contrast compare to the one you your old one (was that a Sharp?) heh thanks for you help!!!

Oh boy, this isn't good. I have been debating for a week should I return my new 8600 with WUXGA screen because the right side is not as bright as middle and left. I am still under the 30 day return. It's not something I'm happy about, but I would really hate to get a new one with dead pixels....what to do?
This looks like a common problem with the Sharp screens...damn.

The laptop screen is absolutely beautiful. I've never had another screen as crisp and clear as this is. The 1920x1200 is awesome!
I'm going to open a ticket on the dead pixels right now...

The replacement was another WUXGA... Not sure if it is sharp...how do I tell?

Yeah...the replacement is better with the brightness...but I still think it is slightly darker. This one is not as noticeable sa the last. But the dead pixels is frusterating...

I had an 8600 with the WUXGA. That screen is made by Samsung. The WSXGA+ is from either Hitachi or Samsung. I had to return my 8600 'cuz that WUXGA resolution was just too tiny for me. Otherwise, it was a beautiful notebook screen with no brightness, coloration, or dead pixel problems.

Maybe the Samsung WUXGA is the better of two companies being used by Dell. Unfortunately there is no way to specify which one you want, so it's a crap shoot on a return. Many posters on the Dell forum rave about the quality of the Sharp, but more and more posts are cropping up about the brightness issue. This is really too bad beacuse other than that it's a great notebook. I get 4+ hours of battery use, the 1.7 MGZ is fast and the M10 is a great card for any use. Well, I have already notified Dell of my intention to return this one, so I have a week left to decide on whether it's worth the hassle. Problem is, I paid almost $3000.00 for this one, it's loaded and once the 30 days run out I'll have to deal with......dare I say......the words.....DELL TECH SUPPORT....:)

I haven't noticed this issue at all. I have a WUXGA and it's absolutly gorgeous. I love it. Not sure who makes it though.

Do you know if you received a Sharp LCD? It should say the screen maker on your invoice slip, and packing list.

Nothing worse than spending big $$ on a laptop to have to agonize time away staring at your LCD in different color pallets looking for stuck pixels. My SXGA T41p is free of them (thank goodness). Good luck with the Dell.

My friend has a slightly older dell from a couple years ago and his lcd was beautiful looking except every so often it would do this weird scrambled tear thing.... so it was obviously defective ....to bad too because it had no dead pixels..anyway he sent it in to get replaced and they gave him a new lcd. its apparently different..and although everything works fine now he has like 3 dead pixels... bummer...
anyway my point in posting is that it sounds like dell has either been replacing stuff under the warrenty with refurbished or different parts in the past as well. I believe the lcd he got is a completely different one altogether than the one that came with his laptop
i dunno

I made my decision. I'm returning the 8600 to Dell, and I ordered a ThinkPad R50P. I'm using the notebook for business primarily, but occasional gaming. Price is not really an issue I'm happy to say, so basicaly i got the same machine from IBM as I had, but it's the 15" display in UXGA. There were some other issues that bugged me with the 8600, namely the really cheapo trackstock buttons and keyboard. I had some problems getting used to the wide display, stuff just never looked right. Thats was just me though, others loved it.

Well, my 3rd LCD is on the way to the tech (including the original). Hopefully this one will be free of the brightness problem, and dead pixels. I'll keep everyone up-to-date.

Ok, I just noticed this after a week of use. I didnt think of it much until I came upon these threads. It doesnt really bother me much as the ghosting I experienced with the WSXGA+ screen. The slight darkness for me seems to occur at both sides.
It is only really visible when the brightness is set at a notch below the middle brightness setting. At full tilt it is not noticeable. I dont think I will take my chance at sending my laptop in and to have one lcd sent back with dead pixels, which is something that I worry more about.
