Hi,

My new Inspiron 6000 laptop completely freezes up every so often - anyone know what might be up with it?

When it freezes, only a hard reboot will get it working again. It seems to happen at random, although it perhaps happens more often when the wireless card is on, and/or when a usb mouse is plugged in.

I've tried all the diagnostic tests (all passed), performed a complete restore (changed nothing), and have called Dell's technical support (useless), but to no avail.

Any help appreciated!

Si.

Erm, uninstall the chipset?
I hope you mean the drivers and not the chipset as I can't remember a mainboard that did not have the chipset soldered to itself for a really long time ;)

I'm reluctent to do anything that involves opening up the machine, especially as it is brand new. I tried updating the drivers but no luck.

Looks like this is going back to Dell. Thanks for the advice.

I, too, have a new (one month old) I6000 with freezing problems. I ran every diagnostic and re-installed the OS (four times, including a complete format/install from CD), and I still have problems.
Since I was outside the 21 days-from-purchase window, I went through hell trying to set up a warranty replacement. After 2 hours and 45 minutes on the phone, including countless transfers, dropped calls, 20 minutes at a time on hold while "Kevin" or "Ricky" "talked to his supervisor" - and even being transfered once to the (I think) America-based goverment support line and then again to the fee-based help line - I finally reemed out another "Kevin" in Customer Care and he agreed to send me a "refurbished" laptop. (Apprently that does not mean it is used, but rather returned for other than technical reasons. I hope.) Buyer beware!!

My system:
Inspiron 6000
XP Media Center
1 GB RAM (2 DDR2 SDRAM Dimms)
100 GB hard drive (5400 rpm)
2GHz/2MB Cache/533MHx FSB Pentium M 760
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon x300
8x CD/DVD burner (Sony)
15.4 WSXGA+ display
6-cell (53WHr)
frequent problem freezing up while loading Windows or in normal operation
2 years @home service, which apparently doesn't cover whatever problem I happen to be having at the moment (citing Homer Simpson: "Extended warranty? How can I lose?")
