Question for the Dell 8600 owners out there... can you configure the touch pad to scroll by running your finger along the side (similar to the sager touchpad)?
I think it is a software config issue not a touchpad hardware issue although I've become quite used to using the "finger scroll" when looking through documents or web pages and would like my next laptop to have that functionality.

Yes. If you installed Dell Touchpad driver. You can setup it in control panel mouse property.

The software/driver you're looking for are the synaptics touchpad drivers.
synaptics driver page (http://www.synaptics.com/support/downloads.cfm)
The driver allows you to designate corners for tapping commands and scrolling and much more.

I tried to install the synaptics drivers and they did not seem to be compatible with the touchpad hardware. When I ran the touchpad options utility it gave me options for an external mouse but not the touch pad options.

that is most likely because it's an "alps" driver you're looking for. the 8600 that i have has alps, not synaptics...
try that!

yup - i've got the alps driver installed and running but tried to install the synaptics one because I liked my sager touchpad (with synaptics) better... but it did not work so I gave up :)
