I have a dell insprion 1000 that shuts down after startup. I am runing windows XP. It gets to the windows startup screen then shuts down. Does not seem to matter if I have it plugged in or not. Any ideas or help is appriciated.

No, it started some time ago. Before it would run for a while then shut down. It seems to have gotten worse. The amount of time before it would shutdown as gotten shorter to where it will boot to the windows screen then shut down.

see if the problem occurs in safe mode if it doesn not then something is wrong with what you have installed currently or possibly virus/spyware related. If it does it in sdafemode also then you ight have to reconsider reinstalling windows.

It still does it even in safe mode. I guess I will have to reinstall windows. Do you think that I can just reinstall without formatting?

try to repair windows that way you shouldn't loose all your data

Well you could techincally reinstall a another copy of windows ontop of the old installation but... If there was a specific trojan or file that was causing the issue then it will almost certainly happen again. This may also be hardware the only way to know for sure is to wipe the system completely clean.

Check out this website and see if you are having some of the same symptoms mentioned there. Seems like many have fixed their overheating problems with their solutions....www.danandsherree.com/2005/04/02/our_dell_inspiron_11.php

Good luck...I had the same problems and checked out this site. I did have a bunch of dust and crap in the heat sink. It has worked for me to a point. I am still having problems but am wondering if I just am not putting things back right.

I had the same problem with the 1000, check the screw on the bottom of the laptop, under the AC adapter port, mine was loose, tightened it up and viola!

No more issues.

YMMV

Make sure the fan/s are clear of dust.

Do it this way, try running the diagnostics of the system and it if still shuts down while running the diags, then it's not just an OS problem.
