View Full Version : if your linux was a car, it would be a.....
 This is almost poetic.
Anyway, just wondering, if you could classify your linux install as a car, what car would it be.
Here is an example:
If my Fedora was a car, I'd be a Hummer H2. Why? Because it comes with every possible feature and a kitchen sink. Its slow. Its also very resource hungry, and HIGHLY unreliable.
My Turn:
If my Xubuntu was a car, it'd be a customized (not riced-out) Civic. Its pretty light-weight, resource-efficient, and comes only with the basic needed features. It wouldn't be a ricer civic, because on the outside its just your generic XFCE theme....nothing fancy.
you go! :speechles

If debian/stable was a car, it would be a Toyota!
Production level reliability, but not that great on features. :$
I usually end up with debian/unstable on my desktop, I dunno what car it is(I know naught about cars), but unless it's maintained regularly it won't last long!

My laptop Ubuntu- A Dodge Durango Limited Edition...
It's highly configured, a little sluggish with the handling but it's got some serious power. Not entirely stable. Should be better, but it's still pretty much the best in it's class.
My Desktop Gentoo- A Dodge Viper...
Extremely fast, and handles perfectly. Very stable, but repairs can be difficult and costly.
So what are the chances of me comparing both of my pc's to Dodges when the 3 cars I bought have all been asian?

Mine is a 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid. Sporty, great gas mileage, and very, very reliable. Doesn't cost an arm and a leg... not a Porche or Lamborghini.... and I'll know it will out live all of those. It's economical and a relatively good environmentally minded citizen.
Windows is a GTO Mustang. Looks great (though a bit dated), but in the end you'll curse the day you bought it.

If my linux were a car?
Ubuntu = the Honda hybrid , dependable, low resource requirement, looks pretty, lightweight, and if its well maintained, it will run forever
Windows XP Pro = a ford ( any ford ) resource hungry, breaks down often, costs an arm and a leg to repair if you dont do it yourself, and made from a company that loves money so much they are willing to screw their customers ( hmm sounds like micro$oft)

if my knoppix was a car, it would be an 89 toyota tercel with only 3 of the 4 cylinders working and in need of a serious alignment, and no working stereo. It's pretty slow, the mouse doesn't work, the sound doesn't work, and I can get my video card settings to work.

And that is what places like this are for;) Start posting questions- in a new thread of course...

I wouldn't associate Linux with a Ford - Ford's aren't reliable.

:moon: Being a certified ASE master tech for 25+ years and worked on all domestic brands at dealerships:dance2: I am more qualified to state reliability than MOST!:lolatyou: Your statement was a bit erroneous. For anyone to imply that any domestic brand is better than the next is simply misinformed. The American auto industry is getting better but still has room for improvement. And I must credit GM for the Delphi offer, I mean look at how American companies say seeya to the workers when they send the jobs overseas without any compensation.:yeahthat:
Done preaching : My PCLinuxOS experience has been like a UJM, "universal japanese motorcycle" , turn it on and it just runs.:dude:

If my ubuntu breezy was a car, it would be a 2001 Honda Civic EX with a cracked bumper cover and a slight vibration on the highway.
It's louder than there is any reason to be for as fast as it is (no way to control fans on z70va), the ati drivers cause weird cosmetic issues sometimes, and the wifi is bumpy at best!
Come on Dapper!

Wow... tough to say..
First of all, the Ubuntu
If my Ubuntu were a car, it'd be an M3 GTR with a cracked windshield. It's got everything you need to kick some ass, but right now the gfx drivers aren't working well..
Then there's the windows:
If my Windows were a car, it'd be the 2003 Dodge Stratus R/T, because the clutch sticks and reverse is impossible to find, but once you know how to drive it, life's a breeze. For me, operating Windows has never been a problem, as long as I have good protection. With the Xserve as a firewall and Panda, it's a bitch to use, but it's secure and runs.
If my Mac (client) OS X were a car, it'd be the concept Rolls Royce 101EX because everything about it just feels alllll right... It's the perfect OS for the hardware, and I love to use it. However, the tires look a little too... bland.
If my Mac (server) OS X Server were a vehicle, it'd be this:
