OK here you will find my full review of the HP DV8000z, I’ll try to cover every thing, but I will mostly cover all the things I like.
Well to start off let me tell you about what happened to my laptop, not 8 hours after I got it. To fully understand, just know that I am a SUPER paranoid person and constantly come up new and ingénues ways to keep my laptop safe (I owned a gateway 4026gz). So I get My new HP but with the hectic day I have ahead of me with school in all, I plugged the laptop to the charger and placed the laptop on the one sitter couch, to full any burglar I placed a pillow over it. I mean come on who looks for money and gold in a couch?
That was the end of that. I came home later, and my dad (the only other person living in my home) was sitting on the couch, yes the very couch my laptop was on. I really didn’t think much of it, since I though he moved the pillow and found the laptop, until I saw the pillow still there and my laptop no where to be found. So I ask him “dad where’s my laptop,”? My dad replies “I don’t know, where ever you left it,” .
Needless to say, I got that feeling that you get when, you get pulled over, or for some of you, that has had there car broken in to, you feel very vulnerable, hard to explain until you’ve went through it. I get him up about to cry, and sure enough there it was under the pillow, I was sure the screen was doomed. I slowly opened it, knowing it was broken, wishing it was a IBM ThinkPad. I don’t see any crakes, but I thought surly it wouldn’t come on?! My dad is more then 200 pounds, and ALL his wait was on it for more then 2 hours. I press the POWER and on comes this AMAZING, beautiful white screen, for the very first time I see my baby come to life. No cracks no problems what so ever. So sufficed to say this is good quality laptop.
That’s all well and good but what about the rest? I’m getting to that, If you don’t want to here this FULL story go ahead and skip down to ( LAPTOP )
I started my laptop buying endeavor because I was going to school, and even though I didn’t need one, I wanted an upgrade, I do a lot of graphics, Photoshop and the rest of the suite, but lately I’ve moved towards more hardware demanding programs, like Zbrush, Maya, light wave, and so on.
I started off with a dell 9300, for the money you can’t beat it, I maid the call and ordered one with a coupon. I then started reading about the Turion processors and did more and more reading, by the end of the night I was an AMD pro, no just kidding but I new enough to know that 64 bit was the next wave and I didn’t want to spend another $1,500 in the next 2 years! Add to the fact that allot of websites put AMD and Centrino head to head and AMD took it in almost EVERY category. So I looked around, turns out HP is about the only AMD Turion laptops I could find. Which then led me to the DV8000Z which is the only one that comes with the Turion ML-44 (the best Turion as of now).
After the reading review and every thing ells I could muster, I called dell and canceled. I really wanted to stick it to dell since the sells man was such a jerk. I then called HP and talked to the best sells men I ever had the pleasure of dealing with, this guy bent over backwards to make the sell. He gave me every thing I wanted and at the price I needed. He also called me back (HP is inbound) and they are not supposes to make outbound calls, one could get in big trouble. He did so though and I really appreciated that. So I made the perches. Now it was all about waiting. I went to eBay and got some Norton stuff at a good price, to hold me over until the laptop arrived.

So now I got the laptop and I’m ready to give my review. Let me break it down in to categories to make things easier.
Screen: I found the Screen to be overwhelming (in a good way) big bright, beautiful, I have so much room!! I don’t know what to do with it?! I thinking of renting it out… I ran a test and as far as I can tell no dead pixels. As far as the quality, well I think we all know that. My only complaint is the hinges are a little on the lose side, but nothing to worry about really.
Keyboard: What can I say, I’ve never seen a laptop with a number pad on it, makes it really nice to have, and really adds to the over all sense of luxury you get with this laptop. I really like the black trim around it, if this laptop where a car, it would be a black Lincon Navigator, fully loaded.
Features: I hate to be vague but it’s late and you should know most of them if you are interested in this laptop. I like the light scribe feature on the DVD-R burner, I don’t think any other laptops have that. The little space for your remote. Oh and the fact that this amazing laptop is so big that you can put 2 hard drive in it!! That’s crazy. The quick play feature is great, you can play music and DVDs with out booting up to save battery, even though booting up is a breeze.
I bet your asking how dose it run? Dose it run HOT? How long dose the battery last? Dose it boot up fast? How fast is it?
Well, I’ve never seen a laptop so big, led alone so quite, if it were not for the blue lights and the super bright screen, I would never know it was on, even when playing a DVD. As far as it running hot, no not yet, I can get it warm but not so hot it can’t sit on my lap. The battery is good, I haven’t been able to fully test it, but be sure to check back as I’ll update this post if people are interested.
I never liked to shut my old laptop down since it would take an hour for it to boot up, with that said, I enjoy shutting down this laptop, only because I get a kick out of watching how fast it boots up. I haven’t really counted yet, but with all the optimizing I have done, I can almost say for sure it’s under 30 seconds, and that’s with Norton firewall and System works .
How fast is it? Well this notebook is very fast, but I really haven’t been able to see this to it’s max since it only has 512MB of RAM. Just with that though it’s already REALLY fast. It hasn’t crashed on me yet, that’s for sure.
The over quality is right on, I would say this notebook was built like a tank since it can handle my dad’s big butt on it, You can tell this is a great quality laptop right out of the box.
There’s not much more I can think of besides to tell you, to make sure you have a BIG laptop back, because this beauty is huge,
As far as how good the graphics are, again I’m not sure yet I’ll put halflife 2 on it tomorrow. I was told it was a good game so I went out and bought it at GAMECRAZY for $10.00 bucks. Can any one tell me more about this game? Will I get any thing out of it? Is it really what people say about it? Thanks
The only thing I would like to change is the graphics card, I would love to put a 6800 in here, that would do it for me. I would never need to upgrade. I hope this has helped some one. You won’t be disappointed, with this laptop, I promise. T really is a show stopper, every one that’s seen it stop dead in there tracks and are shocked an awed.
