View Full Version : 5670 One hot puppy?

Just picked up my 5670 at CompUSA yesterday.

It was $1300 after 2 CompUSA rebates, and that's for the 120gb/2gb version.

It was advertized with 533 memory, but I haven't opened it up to check.

CompUSA also threw in some other products: Epson Print/Scan/Copy flatbed printer, wireless router, CA Virus software full version with 1 year subscription, 2005 Tax software, $100 in local restaurant gift certificates, and a store credit of somewhere around $50-100 after signing up for frequent buyer program for $30 lifetime membership.

Not bad...

The laptop experience day 2 is showing flaws though. This thing is hot in just the wrong places! It feels like the mouse pad is having very hot air venting around it and the right palm rest is uncomfortably hot as I type this...

And when you plug in a wireless USB mouse, the main air vent is blowing hot air right at the mouse location on the right. (good if you are left handed).

Also the USB port locations are dumb. There should be some in the back. Instead they are very much in the way on the sides close to the front.

I guess that will force me to pony up to a $60 bluetooth mouse. But after being a heavy bluetooth user for 1 year, I expect problems with that. I wish they would hurry up and find a more robust short wireless technology and kill bluetooth. It is a horribly flawed technology.

So make sure you can take the heat before you get a 5670, and I expect it's the same with the 8204....

I have some heat coming out the vent on the right-hand side on my 5672, but none coming from the mousepad. Also, I haven't found the heat to be unbearable (it's juts warm), and I haven't noticed the palm rest getting more than just warm as well. And, this is after transcoding a full-length movie with the task set at real-time (so, taxing the processor), and playing Halflife 2 for two hours.

So, I think it's warm, but not hot. Some flaws I've noted: the keyboard's a little loose for my liking, and the screen has a significan amount of glare.

A USB mouse with a wireless "key" like the G7 by Logitech may be a good awnser for the USB issue, the key is tiny smaller than a USB drive and has no wires connected to it. I want a G7 because it has a stationary battery charger, hot swapable batterys (comes with 2) and the key which makes it easier to move with the laptop. That is a killer price even with the slower X1400 mobility I have to admit to being tempted.

Does it really have 2 gb RAM? If so it's an exclusive to compusa. The WinXP Home model on Acer's website has 1 gb.

Hey. How is it with fan and noise? Are the fans always on?

I didn't notice mine to make much noise at all, even when gaming. The fans run constantly, but they're very quiet. I'd say they'd be noticeable in a hushed office, but not in the typical environment with any background noise at all.

Yes, it definitely does. That z program and the control panel and the task manager confirm it.

I have seen other retailers with the 2mb version, but no one close to the price CompUSA put this puppy into my hands...

Yes, the fan is always on, but it is super quiet. You can feel the air coming out of it on the side at all time.

The fan never seems to speed up like my old Toshiba. When the Toshiba was getting hot, it sounded like I had a leaf blower in there...

The whole thing is incredibly quiet. You can't hear the hard drive and even the cd/dvd is whisper quiet.

I need to find a solution to quiet the vibration noise that the stupid little scroll button makes. It's the button between the mouse keys and it rattles when I type. Very annoying.

I am thinking a little piece of foam should keep it from shaking around.

I think the button is useless, so I might pull it off and put a dab or removable silicon glue to hold it still.

Some people are saying that it is capable of around 2000+ 3dmark05 scores. I am going to go pick one up now I think. They had them at compusa, and my friend works there so I will get it for about $1000 after rebates and discount.
I am going to be using it just for doing word processing, video encoding, music, and artwork. Not too much gaming. My sager 5720 will be handling the games for the most part. But it seems that this acer will be comparable with an x700/6600go more or less. I will review this thing once I get it. ...
If I can get my flake of a friend to answer his phone, lol -

oh the joy lol.... you are much better off doing a reload anyway though. That is what I loved about getting the sager blank from the start.
Hopefully random drivers wont be an issue.
