Good evening,

I have an Acer Aspire 5670 (T2300 - 1GB DDR - 80GB HDD - ATI X1400)
Everything is working fine (for my needs) but there is one annoying thing...

After 5min from booting up, the notebook starts to generate randomly an annoying "pop-up" sound in the background.
Over day when there is noise around you this is hardly notable, but at night when there is no noise or sound around you, this become very annoying and NOT acceptable!!

The sound is best discrible as an pop-up sound (like something is clicked on) followed by an error sound, this all mono in the background and not as loud as the normal sound volume.
The frequency of the pop-up's rises almost equaly using the laptop (with or without adaptor, it makes no differences)

At first I tought there was something running or trying to update in the background of Windows.
So I removed the original Windows and programs + reformatted the full HD (deleting all partitions first)
After installing a good working XP PRO version, I still have these pop-up's...

My next suggestion was to look in the BIOS of the laptop, as my surprice I had those sounds also on BIOS level!!
(could it be some speed-stepping technology, made non visible or changable in the BIOS by Acer?)
So my biggest fear is that this has nothing to do with Windows but a hardware level problem is...
In the Phoenix BIOS there is almost nothing you can change or do wrong, I've
tested all possible combinations but nothing helps.
I updated the original BIOS from 3209 to the latest 3219 version available by Acer, also here no change.

When I returned to the shop where I buyed this laptop they send me home with the excuse that the machine in there eyes is working perfect.
And as I expected they dind't notice the background sound... (what you want when there are playing 32 LCD screens loud music clips near the laptop when testing)
They finally advised me NOT to send my laptop to Acer for this problem, cause there is a big chance that i've lose my laptop for a month or 3...
So to make it clear: I have no support at all...

If anyone have more info about this or have the same problems with there Acer Aspire 5670 please let me know about it (mail: red-flyer@pandora.be)
A sollution to this problem is also very welcome, but I don't wan't to start dreaming... hehe

Thanks anyway for the support!!!

Kind regards, Roman Kurt

First of all, are you sure that it is not the hard drive that is making that sound? To be sure, place your ear on the laptop to the left of the touchpad (where the specs are), and stay that way for 5-15 minutes (I know I know, it's a pain, but that's what I did). Make sure the hard drive is idling while you do it (ie, do it in BIOS).

Days ago I recieved a replacement because my previous 5672 was crashing randomly. But another problem was the hard drive was making a strange metalic-like clicking/slicing sound. Hard to describe it, but now that you mentioned it, it does kind of sounds like the navigation sound (the click cound in explorer). Just like you, I could only hear it when it is very quiet, and even if I was outside of Windows (BIOS for example). The sound occured completely randomly.

Acer will be mailing me a replacement hard drive on Monday, because even my replacement unit (which I got from the store) is making the same sound. The new unit has no other problem and has been rock stable for days unlike the first unit.

Since the crashing of my first one was completely random, I could not show it to the store right away, and so I told them to listen to that noise instead (which was obivously abnormal), the laptop crashed in front of them later on nevertheless.

Just like for you, they sent me home with all kinds of excuses. But guess what, I filed a complaint with the Small Claims Court (last step before a lawsuit), and brought them the papers to show them that I wasn't joking. It was interesting to see how I got a replacement with no questions asked. :closedeye
