got my 5672 from compusa's deal and I've just reformated the HD.

Now when I goto Acer's website to get the drivers, they list all sorts of Acer "utilities" that I guess were on the laptop before.

Which utility do you guys recommend using?

Acer Empowering Framework v2.1.21.41
Acer eSettings Management v1.3.3.40
Acer ePower Management v1.8.6.053
Acer ePresentation Management v1.1.4.819
Acer ePerformance Management v1.0.10.21
Acer eNet Management v1.01.3.004
Acer eLock Management v1.7.11.23
Acer GridVista v2.50.1202
Acer eDataSecurity Management v1.00.23

There is no "recommend".

Each one has its own purpose. For example, eNet Management is for managing your network adapters (connecting to wireless networks, etc). GridVista is for simulating multiple desktops on one physical desktop.

which is the one that when you hit the volume button or whatever it shows up on the screen like the tv?

it's the launch manager.

it's the launch manager.

Where can I find launch manager for the 5672? I did a fresh reload, and I could not find this on the US or European web site for Acer.

It is not launch manager that you want. That is for the small buttons next to the power button. The email button and internet button will work with out the software.

What you want for the volume buttons and dvd codec is Acer Arcade. Acer Arcade is the only software that Acer suplied that was trouble free. IMHO, all the rest of it, the software you listed above, should be left off. I know my 5672 is running problem free now that I have removed them.

the launch manager did the trick for me though,
I found it on http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5670.html
after I installed it I saw the volume and stuff on my screen.
I haven't installed the arcade software, nor any of the other e-... software, and everything runs fine.

A lot of people seem to think that the Acer Power Management is better than Windows default power management... FWIW.

I downloaded the launch mgr and it fixed my volume buttons as well. When I did a restart shortly after the install I got the bluescreen of death. But when I rebooted, it is fine now.

Gotta love that Acer software quality! Which 3rd world country do they outsource their programming I wonder???

Yeah, you will need the power management software. Atleast until NHC comes out with core duo support. It truly is sad....but the only way to work power on this notebook as of now.

My power settings are working fine with out it. Plus my volume buttons are working and I am not using launch manager.

So if I wanted to reformat my highly awesome 5652WLMi as NTFS and everything, would it be safe to kill the recovery partition after I've burned a recovery DVD?

Thanks!

I guess I'll keep it too, it doesn't take up that much and it might be handy at some point.

1) The recovery partition gets burned to the DVD you're prompted to create. So, if you burn the DVD, you can nuke the recovery partition

2) The Acer ePower utility does NOT allow CPU power to scale automatically. So, if you set it to max performance, it will keep the CPU running at full speed / full voltage ALL THE TIME, which makes the fan run all the time, and keeps the laptop very hot.

Without ePower, windows can dynamically change CPU speed and voltage - 1.0ghz / 1.0v, 1.2ghz / 1.3v and 1.4ghz / 1.4v. This automatically keeps the laptop cooler when you aren't loading it heavily.

Yes I agree. The only good thing about Acer ePower is that usually when its not plugged into an AC Adaptor i'm using WiFi, if it is plugged in I'm using LAN, so its kinda cool i can set it to turn on and off automatically, but other than that I stick to windows to speed step

I'm having problems getting the OrbiCam to work properly after a clean WinXP Pro OS reload. The OrbiCam Driver and Software are installed, it initializes the camera (green LED) but no images are displayed within the OrbiCam Software. One thing I want to mention, it worked with the Acer OS installed prior to the clean OS reload.

New OS: WinXP Pro
