welcome to the world of Debian's APT.

open up Synaptic package manager and browse the goods :)

"aim" is already installed in ubuntu. its called gaim

Applications > Internet > Gaim

internet browser: Applications > Internet> Firefox

email client: Applications > Office > Evolution

office program: Applications > Office > Open Office Writer

media player (audio) Applications > Media > XMMS

http://ubuntuguide.org/#jre

use their sources.list for this one.

dont forget to backup your current list by

: cp /etc/apt/sources.list /apt/etc/sources.list_old

or install the linux .sh installer and run it in console as

sudo sh package.sh

and follow the directions on the java site.
