So, I decided to take some pics thus far of the brightness of my screen. So far I have pics it next to two laptops. THe first is a Dell Latitude, matte screen, SXGA+.

The second, and the real test, is next to a Samsung Q30. The Q30 is an amazing ultraportable @ 2.1lbs, with a glossy screen, and their SuperBrite (or whatever Samsung's tech is called) screen. It is in a similar price range, at $2200

Took the pics with a word document background scaled up so it is just the white. Also, all screens are at 100% brightness.

Mine screen has had considerable custom tweaking, but it goes to show that the screen IS bright enough and CAN look beautiful. The Samsung is a little brighter, but it is a gloss screen. However, the colors on it appear more washed out than do the colors on my 8200, which are very vibrant. Just look at the Start button and taskbars at the bottom of the screen. I tried to angle the two computers both directly at me, but i think that actually just distorted the viewing angle. Anyways, it makes the top corners of all the screens a little darker.

well, i am responding from an apple PowerBook G4 right now. I have used this laptop several times (GFs) just never compared it to my 8204 (didnt have it yet). Observations? (this is a 12.1").

The G4 is running much hotter than the Acer. Not so much a comparison, as a testament to an often overlooked criteria. The 8204 runs VERY cool for what is under the hood. I am just surfing, and the left palm rest on this laptop is hot. While surfing with the Acer, it is just the cold plastic.

I actually prefer the Acer keyboard drastically over the famed Mac keyboards. I still prefer IBM keyboards over the Acer, although I am really attached to the Acer keyboard after just a couple days. The curved interface fits my large hands well, the keys have a great texture (i find macs too slippery). granted, what both the mac and IBMs have in spades is the distance the keys travel (when pushed). The acer could go a bit deeper, but I still like the keyboard much more.

The acer has more flex, certainly, but the powerbook has flex as well. In neither case is the flex noticeable during typing.

bottom line is that on some very fundamental levels, the Acer does extremely well. the actually laptop itself runs cool, and the keyboard does very well when stacked up against 'the best' keyboards in the bus - macs/IBMs.

If you hadn't noticed, I am very impressed with my 8204

Apple made great efforts to "cool" the PowerBooks as time went on; the early 12 inch models were toasty little mothers, the current one barely gets warm. We could argue over the keyboard which is personal preference really, but the Mac's keys are actually quite a bit bigger, thus easier for me to use, as well as having better touch and a longer stroke. I don't mind the Acer 'board, and do like the curve, but still can type quite bit faster while paying less attention on a PowerBook.

Hey Tay,

Your screen looks very similar to mine with respects to brightness. I am also very happy with mine (as you already know).

Thanks for the comparison. Very helpful.
