hey guys have u tried ripping dvds on your 8204. its takes forever when I try to rip a dvd. it takes about double or triple the time from my desktop. let me know if u guys have any suggestions or ideas to why this would be happening. my other laptop which was older was a lot faster.

maybe your secondary IDE channel is set to the dreaded "PIO mode" - that'd limit DVD ripping to around 2X.

Depends on how big it is, standard rip to iso is about 20 minutes, for a bigger dvd rip to file takes about 25 minutes, definitely not an hour.

I havent' had to use my external dvd burner yet because the internal drive is fast enough.

I'm not sure if the Avivo program would work for you if you already have the .vob (from copy and paste), because that's what I have installed and my transcoding have been lightening fast. But it sounds like a DVD issue.

Here is the link to the avivo program:

Do you have to use their special software for Avivo encoding or is there a way to use it with 3rd party apps like VirtualDub?

At this point, you have to use the Avivo software. And, it's just early beta, as I understand it. Works great, though.

At some point, ATI will be 1) releasing a version of the Avivo utility that actually utilizes the GPU for encoding/transcoding, which I guess will make it encode/transcode before you've even decided to do it, and 2) making the capability available to other utilities and codecs. Then, our 8204's will be able to encode/transcode instantaneously, by reaching into quantum space and making use of all of the computers that exist in the multiverse...

I use DVD Shrink, an open source tool, and on average a DVD is ripped and shrunk in about half an hour. I don't know if that's a lot but it's good enough for me.

how can you change that setting

right click on 'my computer' - manage - device manager - IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers - secondary IDE channel(dbl-click) - advanced settings - device 0,transfer mode.

does that help?
