Catalyst 6.2 for the X1400

I edited the INF file for the Catalyst 6.2 drivers to include the X1400 (I even tried to copy/paste much of the info in the Acer's version of the ATI driver INF) and no matter what, the installation rejects the video card.

Anybody had any luck installing mobile catalyst 6.2 drivers on X1000 series cards?

I tried to install the ATI6.2 on my Acer 4001 but this was not possible, laptop was not supported!
The Omega driver (Bassed on the ATI6.2) work perfectly!

After editing the inf file, have you tried right-clicking on it and selecting "install" (rather than using the ATI installer)? It worked for me using the desktop drivers. If you rerun the ATI installer, you'll overwrite your edits.

Yeah, that's my problem, when I do that, it doesn't do anything.

Here's the route I took:

1. Got the desktop 6.2 drivers
2. Got D-Force MobileMod from http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=602
3. Install the 6.2 package. It will fail with something like "unrecognized video card".
4. Run mobilemod. Note that when it looks for the inf file to modify, there's a choice at the bottom of the dialog for Win2K or WinXP drivers - pick the appropriate one and find the inf file which will start with C2 or Cx.

5. After mobilemod is done, find the relevant inf file in \ATI\Support\... and right-click on it, and select install. If the installer prompts to search, say that you'll designate the location and that you have a disk (this can be done from the device manager for the display adapter as well).

6. You'll get a loooong list of video cards. Find the x1400 and select it.

7. When it's done, reboot and you should be on your way. You can verify that the new drivers are installed from the device manager or from the ATI CCC.

That's the route I took, but the problem is that that version of MobildeMod is old. It doesn't add X1400 to the list. How did you add it?

BTW, this is what MobileMod says about the 6.2 driver INF:


• Driver does not support Mobility Radeon (M6)
• Driver does not support Mobility Radeon 7500 (M7)
• Driver does not support Mobility Radeon 9000 (M9)

This driver can be modified
Press the Modify button to do so

I manually copy and pasted the contents of the INF file from Acer's driver to ATI's catalyst driver, and went into the hardware manager to update the drivers. It work, but I am not sure if this was a good thing to do :S

I installed the mobile catalyst drivers without issue on my X1600 (TM8204).

Make sure you use the link I provided, navigating through the ATI site seems to result in a different file.

The one that worked for me was:
6-2-mobile_xp_dd_ccc_enu_30156.exe

...and I expect an apology if this works for you.

No, it doesn't work. But sorry anyway, I was just so frustrated.

BTW, how did you install those drivers on the X1600 without an issue? X1600 is not in the list anyway.

I made sure I installed .NET 1.1 prior.

Actually now that I think of it I was getting an error that the "VGA driver could not be found"...or something to that effect. I installed the ATI drivers from the Acer driver backup CD first and then I was able to run the aformentioned file successfully.

My machine is the 8204. When you get that message about xyz not being supported, click whatever it points you to in order to modify the inf files (you can see it in the dialog you quoted above). After that the x1400 should show up in the list of cards when you try to install the driver directly (not through the ATI installer).

i thought you were trying to get the 6.2 drivers working with your x1400. The procedure I gave should work - it did with my x1600. Not without a fair amount of pain along the way.

I installed the Omega drivers a few weeks ago. I've been having problems where I'll click on a button and it will stay on the screen, sitting above all other images on the screen. But that's not the real issue.

I can't get the ATI Tray Tools to let me clone my display onto a VGA monitor. I've got a presentation coming up next week and I'm thinking I'm going to have to reinstall the ATI drivers.
