View Full Version : 8204 screen getting brighter?

I think I'm seeing things, but my 8204 screen seems to be getting brighter, either that or I'm just getting used to it?

It's actually really workable and a pleasure to work with, with the exception when I get close to my screen I see those terrible grey lines.

I think it's what I've been saying for a while; the backlight takes a long time to get up to full brightness. When I turn mine on, there's a dark patch at the middle of the screen, but after a few minutes it's completely gone.

As for the lines, they are there when you poke your nose against the screen but because of the higher resolution, they're not as obvious as they were on the 15" Powerbooks.

I mentioned it once before, but at the risk of being labeled crazy I haven't pushed this school of thought. I definitely beleive my screen has gotten even brighter. I'm sure that a little bit of it is from my getting use to it which is also a good thing. But as I compare it to my 21" LCD that I have been using with it all a long, there's really no denying it has gotten brighter. I would say egual to or similar to going up about 2-3 nothches when holding down the Fn+Right Arrow.

Glad I'm not the only crazy one

I don't really think the brightness is a problem on mine at all. But they grey lines are definately not a "pleasure" to work with! Have you tried watching a video? The lines make it so muddy its disgusting.

I wouldn't say the brightness has been a problem for me. I just wish it was a little brighter. But I typically want brighter no matter what screen I have. My 8204's screen is really bright as my pics have shown. I just think that it has gotten even brighter with time. The grey lines do tick me off. I hope there will be some kind of remedy in the near future. I would say that the lines are my only gripe. They don't bother me horribly but do mess up a DVD movie and certainly present a problem when I'm doing graphic design work. I have resigned myself to using my flat panel monitor when doing graphic design so it doesn't effect my work. I just don't think I should be forced into that situation. Other than that it's GREAT!

I've noticed the same thing on my HP laptop.
The screen started out with a really blue tint to it but it's now been almost 2 weeks and the tint is almost gone.

yah I agree, the grey lines are a major pain in the ass, but I think i"m going to get an external lcd to do all my graphics and video editing. I am at the project site right now and the laptop is killing it in getting the job done, so in the end I'm really happy with the performance of the 8204.

I agree - my display is brighter now than when new. That's not "magic" either; in hi fi a period of breaking in before maximum performance is achieved is universal; capacitors, voltage regulators etc. all "wear in" with age. It's not a huge amount brighter, but definitely not as dim as out of the box.

Also I have examined my screen (build date of my machine 0602) with a 10X loupe and I have NO grey lines, splotches, uneven colors, dim corners, or any other issue (beside dimness). You guys with the grey line problem should be seeking redress...

Bottom of your computer; there's a little sticker with Date of Manufacture on it.

ocean158,

The only thing, are you sure that when you replace the screen that you will get better brightness? You might get better viewing angles and what not. If you are going to do it, please let us know what the results are. Don't forget to take a before and after picture of your laptop. :p

That's the same screen as on my 8204, and on all except one that someone mentioned.

The Ferrari has been out for quite some time. I'm dying to know why those owners aren't complaining about their screens if they're the same. That actually gives me hope if it's not the screen itself, it has to be driver, software, or other hardware related. That would imply that just switching screen brands thru an LCD replacement company might not help. Maybe with an update or some such solution, the screens grey lines can be fixed.

Does anyone know if the Ferrari suffers form the same "grey line" syndrome?

Hey, CZ:

I had a Ferrari 3200 18 months ago and the screen looked exactly the same. Same issues with lack of brightness, off axis performance, and the "lines" which it seems are a offshoot of how the polarity is managed on these screens, not an actual hardware or software problem.

I think we're just a highly critical bunch; Samsung has obviously made millions of these pups by now and not heard much bad back, certainly not had major numbers of returns. So bottom line I guess we learn to live with it... learn to take a "don't worry, be happy" view.

Not sure if I'm going to do it. I might be better off buying an external lcd monitor when working on heavy graphics and video. I'm used to the brightness now, viewing angles suck but I'm getting used to it. I'm really impressed with the performance so it's aiding in my ability to make a living on this current project I am contracted on .

I'm curious what these grey lines look like. Do you have a screen shot of them?

hehe just to clarify its not the massive grey bars we mean!

Notice in the image how every 2nd line HORIZONTALLY is brighter.

Boy you are right, I did think that was what you meant. Either way I can't see any problems on my screen (maybe it's just my eyes).

Sorry to hear that some of you do have this problem!
