I understand old computers, but the new stuff has gotten past me.
Bought my first laptop and want to set up LAN.
I started to buy a NETGEAR - WPNT834 RangeMax 240 Wireless Router. Then I started to read "Usage and Compatibility with Wireless Client Utilities"
and realized I had no I deal what I was doing. What are the Compatibility issues? Main issue is my built in Intel PRO/wireless 3945 802.11a/g mini card.
I thought this was the best I could get. Will I find this a bottleneck?
I have My old Custom built 2 gighzs that I want to use as storage and backup system. I now have yahoo/DSL and I looking for the best setup I can get based on a product like "NETGEAR - WPNT834 RangeMax 240 Wireless Router". Would change providers if I needed to.
Can I hear some ideas as to what you would do? Something in the $500/700 Range. I have a 2wire 1701 HG gateway that is maybe crap, because I can only get 37 kbs through it.
Your help will be greatly reward:dude:

Normal 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g is a standard, and therefore any a/b/g router will work with any corresponding a/b/g/ card (ie. a with a, b with b, and g with g). However, when you get to the new "high speed" routers and cards, since the 802.11n standard *which is to be the new higher speed standard) is not yet finalized, each manufacture has thier own version of it. For this reason, you can only guarantee the higher speeds, when using a card and router fromt he same manufacturer.

In regular day use, if you have a Company X brand 802.11g router, and a Company Y brand 802.11g card, you will have no problems.
