I've got a Dell CPx and I've been experiencing the following problems. There is discoloration on the screen, the pixels will change to red at random and then back to their normal color, and I get the issue shown in the picture below.

It does that in the top left and bottom right portions of the screen. The laptop does not do this when an external monitor is used. Would you guess it's the LCD, LCD inverter, or...?

You might wanna talk to Dell about that...

I'm sure they don't really want to do much tech support for free considering the laptop is 6 years old.

I'm with you trueblue! My wife's Inspiron 2600's screen seems to have this problem or maybe it's something similar. We see the red pixel dust, but the most annoying is the bright turquoise in place of what is normally white. I updated the video driver but nothing happened. Let me know if you figure anything out.

Probably a bad inverter. You can replace it yourself with parts from ebay, if you're OK with tearing the thing completely apart.

What model is it?

I had an 8200 that would look like the above picture sometimes...the screen would almost look like a "negative" effect...the colors were all screwy. This happened right after I bought the laptop 3 or 4 years ago...called Dell and was told to "reseat" the flex video cable or video flex cable....on the 8200 you had to remove the narrow panel at the top of the keyboard...I looked in the manual to find out how...and there was a cable that looks like it connects the lid to the computer....anyway I would "un-Plug" and "re-plug it and the computer would be fine..however over time this didn't work anymore and right before the warranty expired I e-mailed tech support, gave them a brief history of the problem and within days a tech had come and replaced the entire screen...and it's still working like a charm.....
