I got my new 710M last night and am having trouble connecting it to a wireless network that this computer is connected to. It's a completely open apartment network-no security keys or anything- that I can get my 8200 w/ a plug-in linksys wireless g card as well as my xbox 360 to connect to.

The 710 sees the network, acknowledges that it's an open network, acknowledges the network is full strength, tries to connect but won't.

Here's what I've tried: (it's the 2915 a/b/g card)

Uninstall/reinstall driver
disabled firewalls
uninstalled mcafee and tried to connect
set up WZC via Dell's tech advice (which was pretty useless, by the way)
tried to connect with the intel/PRO program to no avail
tried to have windows configure the connection

Nothing seems to work so far. I tried ipconfig /release and got some weird message about how it is unable to proceed with disconnected media.

Any thoughts or help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I know its a lot of trouble but try resetting the router to default settings and see if this fixes your problems.

I'll see if the complex lets me do that. I haven't tried unistalling the Intel/PRO software yet...maybe that's just confusing the windows config.

try setting the IP address on the Intel wireless NIC static. I have seen some versions of the Intel 2100 and 2200 drivers having problems acquiring IP from NAT.

well, i got it working at my office and my sister's house, but it still won't connect to the network at home. The plug-in linksys card i have has no problems connecting at home or anywhere else. how do i set the IP to be static? I'd like to get this figured out so that i don't have to use the external card anymore.

You have to log into the router and assign the static ip

The static IP solution I suggested is on the NIC. But since this computer may be connecting to more than one router, the IP range may not match as you go from one location to another.

How to:
Right click NIC icon next to the time and select OPEN NETWORK CONNECTION
right click the wireless NIC in the list and click PROPERTIES
in the GENERAL TAB, double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP
select USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS
192.168.2.x
255.255.255.0
192.168.2.1

This is assuming that the IP range used by the network is 192.168.2.x. Depending on the vendors this may differ. Linksys defaults to 192.168.1.x

Error on my last suggestion. You need to find out what IP range the router is using before you set the Static IP on your notebook. However as booga suggests if you bounce between networks the static IP thing wont fly on the other networks.
