New link to HP QuickPlay 2.3 Direct and Windows versions. Separate files for each. This is at sam's request and the files come from the gracious support of Toxico and Boeonoz without who this would not be possible.

I've found a link to the quickplay direct, it can be found on asifism.com
My computer came with vista preloaded, i deleted the hp recovery partition and left an unformatted partition of 3GB and labeled it x:.
i installed the files, and everything seemed to work. The setup ran, installed everything on the x: drive, rebooted, ran and installation in xp, and rebooted vista. now i dont know how to get to quickplay. if i click the button on my laptop it boots into vista and runs quickplay for windows. If anyone knows why this might be happening please help!
it seems that have some1 online..
hello, i'm a newbie here.. been going thru all the posts and i can't help myself to try installing QuickPlay.. are there any master of QP that can help me..
i'm using hp dv1625ts running on xp.. can QP be installed to my lappie?

Okay, this question is posted for toxic or amiga guy primarily, because they seem to be know-all on the issue. Anyone else who can help, please do.
QPD is installed. Only problem is after I install it takes away the drive letter X: that I assigned to the QP partition. Now, I can't boot into QPD because X: does not exist, I'm just seeing healthy space at the end under disk management. Can't assign a letter to it because the only option i get is to delete that partition.
I'm using vista, and partition magic has serious compatibility with it. So, how do I go by assigning the letter X: to that space?
Oh, and you can download all the files from my server. http://www.asifism.com lists the latest keys and you can enter them on http://www.asifism.com/downloader to get access to HPQPDP, QPW 2.3 and 3.0.
Cheers!

FYI
The instructions I wrote are based on performing a FRESH install of your operating system (Vista/XP OS) and associated software WITHOUT using a recovery partition. Trying to install on an existing Windows partition REQUIRES YOU KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO RESIZE YOUR HARD DRIVE AND THAT THERE IS NO RECOVERY PARTITION FROM HP. A SMALL handful of people actually got QP to run this way. Honestly, it is fraught with failure. IMHO
This is largely due to the recovery partition created by the automated disks from HP (Compaq?). The "recovery disks automatically create a partition at the end of the drive that CANNOT be accessed by Windows OS and CANNOT be moved/resized (as far as I know). I have NOT been able to install the Quickplay Direct WITH a recovery partition on the same drive. I HIGHLY recommend a fresh install of your OWN OS.
Also, as far as the 50+ installations I have helped people on and my own testing, NO ONE has been able to triple boot successfully! (XP, Vista AND Quickplay Direct) I have tried several installations and NONE have worked. If you figure out a way, please let me know, so I can then pass that information on to others if they ask. I DO NOT recommend triple booting as this requires massive about to forethought in planning your disks. Additionally, there is absolutely NO promise your computer will boot correctly.
**Quickplay Direct buttons DO NOT support using a boot manager.**
Lastly, the necessary files are being offered by another person. I will update my directions pointing them to the appropriate place. Please be aware that there are download limitations for the software. I STRONGLY suggest once you have successfully downloaded the software, BACK IT UP to DVD. This will prevent masses of people constantly having to download the large files and creating a long wait for access to the info.

user001,
I don't have a recovery partition. I did a clean install of Vista formatting the HDD. I have 2 HDD partitions c and d where i keep my data. The third partition or x: is the one causing problems. I've been able to rename the drive using rmdl.exe, but it isn't much good. Reason, it names the drive temporarily and i can even browse its contents in My Computer, but in the disk management console I still see a healthy partition with an unassigned drive letter. Even though I see it temporarily, I can't hibernate and boot into QPD, I always come to Vista.

The third partition or x: is the one causing problems.
I'm not exactly sure what happened to your installation. But I have completed this 8 times on my own systems and many times helping others.
Assuming your laptop has ONE physical hard drive.
Backup all data to a networked computer or disks.
Insert your Vista install DVD, and start a FRESH installation
At the disk part, select and delete ALL existing partitions
Hard drive should now be raw with ONE huge partition
Create first PRIMARY partition for Windows OS, I recommend about 30GB
Create another PRIMARY partition for Data, using remaining space EXECPT 1028MB.
MB not GB Do not format, you are just CREATING the actual partition section
Create final PRIMARY partition of EXACTLY 1028MB (MB not GB) for Quickplay Do not format, you are just CREATING the actual partition section
Select the FIRST partition (30GB) to finish your Vista installation. Once in Vista, install any drivers necessary to get your system running. (Especially NIC or wireless.) Reboot as necessary when specified. At this point, Windows may inform you there is an unformatted drive and ask if you want to format it. Ignore this. Right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. Select DISK MANAGEMENT. Find the DATA partition, QUICK format it, then allow Windows to assign it a drive letter. Next, find the small QUICKPLAY 1028MB partition. Create a partition, assign it the drive letter X: and but DO NOT FORMAT IT! Exit DISK MANAGEMENT. Extract the HPQPDP archive you downloaded and move the resulting HPQPDP folder into your "C:\SwSetup\" folder. Double click on MY COMPUTER/COMPUTER, double click on C:\Local Drive. You should see the SwSetup folder. Open the HPQPDP folder and run setup.exe
Wait for the ENTIRE installation process finish. Just let it complete without interruption. If the partitions were created correctly, this process will seem to pause, but will finish. Any errors in creating partitions will result in this part of the installation to fail. You then need to reboot your computer to complete the Quickplay direct installation. Allow system to complete the installation of the QuickPlay Direct OS. Currently, this is an Embedded Version of Windows XP. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE INSTALLATION. Once complete, you may shut down the computer.
Boot into your PRIMARY Windows installation. This is mostly for testing purposes, to ensure your boot manager from Vista is still correctly pointing to Vista and the primary (main OS). If you have gotten this far, there should be no errors at all.
You need to extract the Quickplay 3.0 archive to your desktop, run the install/setup for Quickplay 3.0. Contained in the Quickplay3.0.rar archive, are the Vista drivers for your buttons as well. Run that setup and you will have control over your buttons again in Vista.
At this point, Quickplay Direct AND Quickplay for Windows is installed on your system. I recommend inserting a DVD in your drive now. Then power down your computer. Hit the Quickplay DVD button and you should boot into QPD.
Let me know.

user001,
I don't have a recovery partition.
What you're seeing at the end of the disk is normal - assigning the drive letter X: to the space is a workaround step since the QPD installer may not be able to do it under Vista. When the install is complete you'll see a partition with no drive letter identified as Healthy, just like you're seeing.
When you hit the Quickplay button, what boots up? Does it go straight to Vista? If so, it sounds like the boot information wasn't written properly; do you have other partitions? I ran into a situation recently where I had to reinstall Windows due to trying to reinstall QPD after running a dual-boot Ubuntu/Vista scenario. Got a black screen with a cursor. "Extra" partitions seem to confuse the hell out of the installer.
The most recent version of Acronis or Paragon Drive Backup work under Vista with no problems. Resizing a partition with Paragon is a pain; if you use this be prepared to still use Windows' Disk Management. Still, it's better than the alternative for a lot of people - who in the hell wants to format and reinstall?
Thank you for the links as well.

i did install the QLB driver.
V3000 is capable of quickplay as it has the quickplay button similar to that of the DV2000 hp. the QP windows is actually functional i just have to execute it.
i just cant get the HPQPDP to install quickplay direct. keeps giving me the "quickplay can only be installed in quickplay-enabled machines".
i am stuck at this point.
any one has the same problem?
i think i have the same problem.. is it because my laptop spec doesnt support QPDP?

I don't know if this would help but here is a guide (http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=532561) that I made some time ago for HP QuickPlay 2.3, which also lists how you should set up your notebook format and audio issues. To my knowledge, newer dv2000, dv6000 and dv9000 uses a newer codec compared to the old ones. Again, I will see what I can find out about this as I have been meaning to update my guide to include Windows Vista. Unfortunately, I do not have Vista just yet but I will see what I can do. Also, the dv1000 does not support QuickPlay 2.0 but if I'm not mistaken AmigaDude was trying to get it to work. Again, I'm unsure of that.

I'm running a machine from the dv1000 series (dv1680us) that has thus far run every version of QPW from 2.0 to 3.0 and QPD from 1.2 to 2.3. I've yet to have any problems installing it, except when I was dual-booting Ubuntu and Vista. No surprise there, though; I should have guessed that QP wouldn't properly modify the GRUB loader...

It will work with more than one actually; I'm not sure what kind of beef it had with your other partition but I ran with two partitions with no problems. In theory I think the Quickplay partition could be no more than the fourth partition on the drive.

megaupload seems to have a problem here in malaysia. i am think of trying with amigadude steps, but i dont have the proper quickplay 1.2 installation cd. other files i already have, like the 1.3 patch, 2.3 cd :)
p/s: i'm not using v3000, but dv1000 series :) can somebody help me tp upload qp v 1.2 installer
amigadude's solution :
What you need:
1. DV1000 (of course) with WinXP CD
2. Quickplay 1.20 CD ( can be downloaded above )
3. Quickplay 1.30 patch ( can be downloaded from HP )
4. Quickplay 2.3 Files ( can be downloaded above )
5. Hardisk formatted with only 1 Partition C: of WinXP (Pro or Home) and at least 1.30 GB free space
What you do:
1. Get WinXP Installed, patched, etc.. to your liking and take a BACKUP
2. Boot from Quickplay 1.2 CD and install Quickplay
3. Boot WinXP and Install Quickplay 1.30 Patch
4. Install Registry Update - ( see below )
5. Install Quickplay/Windows 2.30 ( QPW\Setup.exe )
6. Install Quickplay/Direct 2.30 ( HPQPDP\Setup.exe )
7. Reboot as requested to Auto-complete Quickplay 2.30 setup
8. Will autoreboot back to Windows, so Shutdown Notebook
Testing QP (From power off):
QP1.30 - Hit any Media key and QP1.30 should start
QP2.30 - Hit the Power key, pause 1/2 second then any Media key and QP2.3 should start
Install QP Registry Update by creating a text file and putting these lines into it:
Code:
REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\QPFlag] "QPFlag"=dword:00000003 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\QPFlag] "QPPlatform"="DV1000"
Save the file as something.reg, i.e. QPFlag.Reg
Right-click on the file and select MERGE
OR
Install the entries manually using Regedit (upper/lower case is important)

A .nrg file is a Nero image, so I'd start with looking for a trial version of Nero, perhaps. If you want something free and legal that's not going to expire on you, there is a free open-source burning program called InfraRecorder that you can download here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/infrarecorder/ir0421_unicode.exe?download

FYI
QPD = Quickplay Direct, applies to versions 2.x and 3.0, FAST boots into a stripped down version of Windows XP Embedded. Will install even on a Vista system.
Version 1.x is the original Quickplay. It requires a different partition size to run. I have not used this version, so I cannot provide any help on it. It runs a modified Linux OS. Check this forum for the CORRECT partition size and where it should be on the hard drive.
Version 2.x & 3.x require a partition at the PHYSICAL end of a hard drive of EXACTLY 1028MB, NOT GB! NO partition can be after it. The automated disks created at first bootup do create the HP recovery partition and the QPD. However, the HP bare OS "install" PURCHASED disks do not. You can try looking here for tips on moving/resizing the recovery partition, if you have one. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS. Mileage varies...
QPW = Quickplay for Windows, applies to all versions, runs the QP service, interface to the buttons while running Windows. Will not quickboot the system. This is basically an HP media player. Will display your pics, movies, play DVD's. NOTE: when I try to use this, my screen goes all black during playback. I don'y know why. I do not use QPW.
Button App = Versions of this program provide software interface to the special buttons on the laptop. If you don't install this program, Windows usually does not know how to react to you pressing the buttons. Also, an entry will appear on the system properties with a yellow icon, if their drivers are not installed for the buttons.
Not all laptops support ALL versions of Quickplay. There are BIOS upgrades to add support for newer QPD. You need to check your model and BIOS version to determine this. I do not know the full line, but there are at least EIGHT model series of laptops spanning several product years. Each has revisions and upgrades and varying component specs. i.e. dv1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 8000, 9000
I do NOT work for HP, nor do I posses a library of varying laptops and which version of quickplay works on said model. I can tell you, if you have an older model, you PROBABLY have version 1.x. You MIGHT be limited to running only this version. BIOS upgrade, and other tweaks might exist. Search for them if you really want to know. Use search terms that include quickplay in quotes, your model number, BIOS revision (if known), etc. to find pertinent info. No one site has all the info.
Physical hard drives (disk) may contain ONLY FOUR PRIMARY partitions. It may contain additional partitions if created as EXTENDED. Only PRIMARY partitions are bootable and therefore QPD must be installed on a PRIMARY partition. QPD installation will FAIL if you tried to install it on a EXTENDED/LOGICAL partition.
To date, no one has been able to run a triple boot, as far as I have heard. Is it possible? I do NOT know. <rant on> Listen, it's been stessful enough to find information on quickplay as it is. HP is NOT forthcoming with the software, installer, etc. Why are some people SO GREEDY they need to boot 4 OS'es PLUS quickplay? I will NOT respond to requests for information on this anymore.
<rant off>
I did not post locations for the files because this changes often. Someone needs to get a major site, like downloads.com, cnet.com, softpedia.com, tucows.com, etc. to host the files. Seems there are SO many people looking, they are shutting down personal sites for exceeding traffic limits.

I don't think there is any need to rant, user001. If you want to help then fine, but if helping out or finding information means you are stressing yourself out, then you might as well find something else to do. This thread is all about helping each other out in terms of making HP QuickPlay work on their respective machine. Ranting about the inexperience of others will not help these people.
Frankly speaking, asking people to email you to ask for help is not a very professional thing to do. It is best that a solution to a problem be available on this thread for all to see. This will help as it will make it easier for someone to stumble on this thread.
I would ask you to calm down and try and be accomadating as there are a lot experts on this thread beside you and me who have enough knowledge to get HP QuickPlay to run.

I don't think there is any need to rant
The entire post was NOT a rant. Only the part specified. I had no issue answering the emails. I'd rather the direct communication instead of split posts on a site like this. Just been my experience it is easier. As a side note, most forum readers would directly communicate with a user that has the info. This isn't an HP support site. The other problem is, as people continue to post, answers are lost on page 7, and the thread is now on 32. (that's just an example). That is just impossible for people to find. And google won't help with that.
Most people have been great about asking for help.
I posted the information above to hopefully answer some of the common questions that appear about Quickplay. There is still some confusion about what the program is and what is needed.
I look forward to helping others in the future. No issues there. I just wanted people to have a basic understanding of Quickplay. Partitioning drives, installing operating systems, etc. are ALL advanced skills. Many users are new to or just starting to try. As with any beginning, you need to know the starting points.

Alright, sorry if I offended you though I would prefer if everything is on this thread. If you want a solution to a problem, you have to understand it well, which is why you should take the time to read through a thread no matter how long. Quick solutions usually backfire, and this is especially directed to those who overclock their notebook graphics without doing the basics first. When I overclock mine, at least I read up on it and now I can enjoy some of my games with high settings :cool2:.
Again, I apologised if you feel offended by my statement.

I know this is kind of a ridiculous request.... but this is a 54 page thread.... and i honestly have no time to read through the ENTIRE thing. So i apologize ahead of time if i ask a question thats been answered earlier, direct me there if you can and i'll read up on it.
I purchased an HP DV9000t notebook, and from what i can gather there are two versions of quickplay... one is the normal media player thing that you can access from vista (which came preinstalled on my system, in addition to a recovery partition) and the other is a direct player, that boots into a seperate and somewhat faster OS. my interest is in the latter. From what i can gather, some people have gotten this direct version to work with vista, and id like to follow their advice, but i can't seem to find the install file -anywhere- every link is broken. So i was hoping that someone could direct me to the 2.3 direct version of HP's quickplay, that lets you access your media without booting into Vista.
A few other notes on my system, I have two hard drives, 4 partitions on the first, and one on the second.... im not entirely sure what order the partitions on the first are in. I know Windows is first and Linux is last.... and the swap and recovery partitions are somewhere in between. im also not using the windows bootloader.... im using GRUB, but that shouldnt be a problem. Also, there was no extra 1000(approx) mb partition on my drive when it shipped, so its not like i deleted anything. just the windows and recovery partitions, and then i used Vista's Disk Management to shrink the partition, so i could add the swap and linux partitions.
So if anyone can give me any help with this, it'd be great.
EDIT: also, i read the linusl little... tutorial.... thing, doesnt help me much since thats for a system with a seperate partition that has Quickplay Direct on it already, and configuring it to work with LILO, which i also don't have. The tutorial that seems the most useful is the one on page.... 42 i think, written by Toxico, and ill just have to add a few extra steps for GRUB...

To date, I don't know anyone that has successfully gotten Quickplay Direct to work with an active Linux installation in a SIMPLE PROCESS. Possible though. I do have directions for installing a primary OS and quickplay direct.
Since all three are operating systems, trying to TRIPLE boot has not worked so far EASILY. If you wish to format, install and reformat and reinstall to try to find the method, you are welcome to give it a go.
I explain in post #803 (THIS PAGE) the situation about multi-boots. From attempting to install Vista, QPD, and Linux, I found QPD had a problem with the boot loader being overwritten by linux. QPD is not addressable anymore after linux is installed. I have NOT tried to insall using a boot manager. your mileage will vary on this. However there are people that have attempted this with some success. You'll have to rely on someone here pointing you in the direction.
Further, post 803 explains QPD MUST be the very last partition on the physical drive. Must also be a primary partition.

well, i dont really see booting to be the problem.... in my experience, GRUB can boot just about anything.... besides, i already have three bootablle partitions, the rescue partition is bootable, the windows vista partition, and then linux..... so technically i'll be quad-booting .... but thats off topic.
What im having more trouble with is the actual programs themselves, every download link iv found is broken.... but i keep seeing all these posts from people who already have QPD 2.3 or w/e it is.... so they've got to be getting it from somewhere.... also, your last line worries me the
p.s. Quickplay v3.0 (NOT DIRECT) is for VISTA ONLY. etc....
i know that much of it.... and like you said its not direct meaning i can't boot into it.... but my quickplay, the 3.0 version, is installed as an application, just like windows messenger and internet explorer on my windows partition, i see no reason that i cant make a seperate bootable partition and put the earlier version there and boot to that for my media. right? which, brings us back to where can i find said earlier version.

Let me see if I can clear this up.
You should be able to d/l the necessary files from (CURRENT AS OF 05-21-07) www.asifism.com You will need to obtain a d/l key from the site owner. He is trying to control the bandwidth used HE is paying for. See below for the appropriate files you need.
Quickplay DIRECT is a BOOTABLE OS (XP embedded)
It is installed on its OWN partition at the end of a drive from a WORKING windows
installation. It MUST be a primary partition. The archive containing the install routine
for QPD is called "HPQPDP". This installation must be on a partition of 1028MB in size.
NO MORE NO LESS!
Quickplay for Windows VERSION 2.x is a windows application (I know of 2.0, 2.1, 2.3)
It is installed and runs as any regular windows app. v2.3 runs under XP fine. I do not
know if v2.3 runs under Vista. Just ask here if someone is running this version under
vista.
Quickplay for Windows VERSION 3.0 is a windows application
It is installed and runs as any regular windows app. v3.0 ONLY RUNS ON VISTA. It is
NOT compatible with XP. It will NOT install on an XP box.
Quickplay for Windows VERSION 1.x is a windows application
It is installed and runs as any regular windows app. v1.x runs under XP fine. I do not
know if v1.x runs under Vista. Just ask here if someone is running this version under
vista. This app is usually found on older model laptops. Using a NEWER version may
require updating your BIOS.
As far as GRUB, LILO, etc. handling booting options, I am aware those programs handle booting tasks fine. I have not tested BRUB/LILO with Vista extensively. The boot manager for Vista is VERY different from previous versions of windows.
However that isn't the issue. The embedded version of XP that is installed AND USED by Quickplay Direct seems to have problems with linux loaded on a drive. I am not running a similar setup, so I cannot offer any pointers here. I have attempted to install and ran into issues. Apparently, if you edit some configuration files/boot manager, people have gotten a Vista/Linux/QPD to run. Please read this thread or see if someone can point you to the correct posts to read.
user001
p.s. as far as i have been able to tell, the boot loader from linux and quickplay direct are not playing nice with each other. there must be hard links from the buttons on the laptop to trigger the appropriate OS to boot. it is somewhere in that process there are issues once linux is installed with quickplay direct. and indeed the recovery partition is bootable. HOWEVER...it is still windows and it does not appear to interfer with the booting process of qpd. linux OUT OF THE BOX does.

Hi, anyone can tell me how to get the quickplay installed into windows?
Detailed Clean Installation of QuickPlay on HP systems.
This applies to those that upgrade and downgrade OS CLEAN installations.
(i.e. Windows XP to Vista or Vista to Windows XP)
Partitioning your drive. I keep separate partitions for Windows OS/applications AND my data files/music/pictures, etc. This makes backups easier. If you decide to maintain a single partition, simply follow the SINGLE partition method.
Before you begin, while you still have a working Windows system, download the drivers for your model for the version of Windows you will be INSTALLING directly from HP. Start here (#http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/sup). (I have a Pavilion dv8210us, so type “Pavilion dv8210us” and then select Vista or XP for the necessary drivers.) Then save them to a CD or USB drive.
At this point, you really need to have intermediate skills when it comes to OS installation, formatting, etc.
Drive Partition Suggestions
1. Three Partition Setup (My hard drive is 80GB. So I split it 30GB - 48GB - 1GB)
Windows OS and programs partition [≈30GB is good]
Data partition [≈48GB]
QuickPlay direct partition [must equal 1028MB] MUST BE THE LAST PARTITION!
Insert the Vista or XP OS bootable disk:
At the drive configuration setup, delete all existing partitions. Confirm as necessary. Under XP, select CREATE. Make one drive ≈30GB for Windows, CREATE another partition of ≈48GB for Data, CREATE another partition of EXACTLY 1028MB. (THIS MUST BE THE VERY LAST PARTITION ON THE DRIVE. All partitions must be primary!) Under Vista, pick CUSTOM for drive setup. DO NOT FORMAT THIS DRIVE (Vista only). Leave it in RAW format.
1a. Single Partition Setup (My hard drive is 80GB. So split it 78GB - 1GB)
Windows OS and applications partition [78GB]
QuickPlay direct partition [must equal 1028MB] MUST BE THE LAST PARTITION!
Insert the Vista or XP OS bootable disk.
At the drive configuration setup, delete all existing partitions. Confirm as necessary. Under XP, select CREATE. Make one drive ≈78GB for Windows/data, CREATE another partition of EXACTLY 1028MB. (THIS MUST BE THE VERY LAST PARTITION ON THE DRIVE. All partitions must be primary!) Under Vista, pick CUSTOM for drive setup. DO NOT FORMAT THIS DRIVE (Vista only). Leave it in RAW format.
2. Once the selected partition setup is complete, let Windows finish installation. Once complete, install any drivers necessary to get your system running. (Especially NIC or wireless.) Reboot as necessary when specified. At this point, Windows may inform you there is an unformatted drive and ask if you want to format it. Ignore this. Right click on MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE. Select DISK MANAGEMENT. If you created a data partition, find it and QUICK format it, then allow Windows to assign it a drive letter. Next, find the small 1028MB partition. Create a partition, assign it the drive letter X: and but DO NOT FORMAT IT! Exit DISK MANAGEMENT.
At this point, you should have a working connection to the internet. Now open your browser and download HPQPDP.rar or HPQPDP.zip from http://www.asifism.com/ to your DESKTOP. For rar archives, you will need to download another program to extract the contents. WinRAR is common shareware. Google it.
3. Extract whichever HPQPDP you downloaded and drop the resulting HPQPDP folder into your C:\SwSetup\ folder.
4. Double click on MY COMPUTER/COMPUTER, double click on C:\Local Drive. You should see the SwSetup folder. Open the HPQPDP folder and run setup.exe
5. Wait for the ENTIRE installation process finish. Just let it complete without interruption.
6. After installation is completed, REBOOT your computer.
7. Your computer will boot into the newly created Quickplay partition. Allow system to perform the installation of the QuickPlay Direct OS. Currently, this is an Embedded Version of Windows XP. DO NOT INTERRUPT THE INSTALLATION. Once complete, shut down the system.
8. Boot into your PRIMARY Windows installation.
For those installing any version of Windows XP:
Look for the QPW folder in C:\SwSetup and install quickplay (for Windows) from that folder. This is the actual Quickplay installation for use INSIDE Windows. The extracted QPW folder will contain Quickplay for Windows version 2.3. You can download the XP drivers for the buttons from the HP site from above.
For those installing any version of Windows Vista:
You need to download Quickplay 3.0 from http://www.asifism.com/ and extract it to your desktop. Run the setup.exe. Contained in the Quickplay3.0.rar archive, are the Vista drivers for your buttons as well. Run that setup and you will have control over your buttons again in Vista.
9. Insert a DVD in the drive, then shut down the laptop. Now hit the Quickplay button. If done correctly, you will boot into QuickPlay Direct and can access your Media features.
NOTE: This collected procedure is the result of personal trial and error AND information gathered on the internet. After searching endlessly, I got this to work under clean installs of XP and Vista.

did you try to install on an existing windows installation? sounds like there are issues with your boot disk settings. what version of windows are you running? did you create the correct type AND size partition for quickplay? what procedure did you follow?

First of all "hello to everybody, I'm the newbee to the forum".
After reading nearly the entire thread I still have the problem that I can't install HPQPDP 2.3 on my Pavilion 6000 with WinXPpro.
Installation always aborts at 5% with the error message "Installation terminated due to partition allocation failure". No matter if in normal or safe mode.
I do have an unformatted primary part at the end of the HD with right size and driveletter X: (the setup creates this partition automatically if one has an unassigned partition bigger than 1GB at the end of the drive). But still this error...
Any ideas?
Thank you and greetings from Bavaria (Germany)
Schmidl
EDIT: In the meantime I found the solution myself  :
The problem was that I had, besides the Windows partition C:, four others on the disk (Swap, Programs, Data and Media). After deleting these four and leaving only C: and the rest as one unassigned primary partition HPQPDP installed properly :w00t: Thanks, HP :reallymad

I've been trying for about 10 hours straight to upgrade from QuickPlay Direct 1.x to 3.2. I am on WinXP on an HP Pavilion dv8120. Following the info in this thread, I have gotten as far as installing the partition. My system even boots into QuickPlay for its round of configuring the audio/video drivers; then I get booted back into XP.
This is where I am now officially stuck. QuickPlay is installed, but no combination of Media key(s) and/or power button will boot me into it on power-up. The best I have been able to get is by adding an entry to my primary XP's boot.ini that points to the QuickPlay partition, but attempting to boot into it does not work (someone previously in this thread mentioned that the partition has to be made the primary active bootable partition, which I have been unable to make happen).
I would imagine that the media keys magic involves marking the QuickPlay partition as active. Is there a BIOS version for Pavilion 8120s I can install to get the proper functionality out of my media keys? I am running bios version F.33, which is apparently the newest for my system (I think. Right?). I am so close I can taste sweet victory, but I am worried about this last battle.

Hello,
I just bought a dv6275ea laptop preinstalled with Vista (and QP3) and as I decided to downgrade to Windows XP, it took a lot of phonecalls, HP livechat support etc to figure out I were on my own. Until I found this forum.
Thanks to links provided earlier I now have QP2.3 (Windows) up running and I believe 2.0 Direct.
However, due to the lack of audio drivers I didn't have any sound on my DVD movies etc. After playing a bit with different tools I managed to "hack" the QP2 Direct installation, install my audio drivers and now everything is working like a charm!
Would not have been possible without all of you people in this thread. THANK YOU!
I will try monitor this thread for some time and give any help I can.
Just for the record, if not stated elsewhere, QP 2.0 Direct is NOT Linux at all, but a Windows XP Embedded on some kind of "hidden" NTFS partition.
With GParted Live CD I were able to mount the partition and do the changes there to gain access to the "device manager" so I could install my audio drivers.

I hope this thread is stil looked upon and updated. I have followed the steps in this thread multiple times and every single time it results in the same problem all of which I have to reinstall windows vista to fix it.
I own a Pavilion DV2550SE that I did a fresh install of vista on, set aside a partition at the end of my drive and started the install of the HP Quickplay Direct 2.3. It finishes the install reboots my system and then gives me the windows XP boot screen. Immediately after seeing the windows xp screen my computer goes to a BSOD. Thats all it ever does.
I saw a thread earlier about a SATA problem which could cause that.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know this isn't solving your problem, but I too worked hard to get Quickplay Direct working on my DV9207. I haven't really used it since. I find that with the undervolting available in both XP and Vista through the use of RM Clock, I get better battery life than Quickplay Direct could begin to offer.
I also really like Media Center in Vista, but that's another story. BTW, my remote works with Media Center in Vista. That's schweeet!
Love this laptop!
Just my 2 cents.

All,
This forum on quickplay is great and I appreciate the knowledge being shared. I too am downgrading a brand new HP dv6500 from Vista to XP and I've gotten everything working except QPD. I have QP for windows... but like many others... finding the actual working install files has been the problem. The latest HP notebooks shipping with Vista no longer include the QPD installs in the SWSetup folder... so we're all stuck surfing the net trying to piece together a valid set of the last XP versions.
I've seen the uploaded versions in the earlier thread posts. As well as the other posts commenting on the corrupt versions of the 9-part rar (that you have to wait forever to get from megaupload... or shell out your clams). Asif's web page gives hope... but he seems to limit the download to those with a reg code he posts to his web page but doesn't seem to work.
If someone has a valid copy of the latest 2.3 install... could you please... please... please... create a torrent and get the torrent file outthere. With the amount of people floating in here... I'm sure it would spread like wildfire and not overtax anyone to share.
I'm not sure why getting this SW out there is such a hard problem. There are so many that need it... HP doesn't want to support it... but we obviously have the knowledge and power in this forum to make this work.
Ok... I'll get off my soap box now... but please... help out your fellow HP techies and let's get this SW posted where all can get it!

Everyone,
So, for the last week I have been trying in vain to get Quickplay Direct onto my brand new dv6500t (CTO Core 2 Duo w/Santa Rosa chipset). Alas, I believe I have run into the perverbial brick wall.
A little history:
QuickPlay is HPs home-grown media player. This was groundbreaking when it first arrived as it allowed users to play their DVDs and Music straight from buttons on the laptop chassis without booting Windows. Quickplay is broken into two pieces. Quickplay for Windows, and Quickplay Direct. Quickplay Direct is the version of the software that boots into its own OS from a seperate partition on your hard drive. In initial versions of QPD, this OS was a Linux derivitive. But, as of QPD2.0 and later, HPs software vendor switched to MS Windows Embedded. Quickplay for Window (QPW) is just that, a version of the software that runs within windows XP. This loads like any other media player application.
The newest HP Pavilion Laptops coming from HP with MS Windows Vista installed are hobbled in their implementation of QPD. Instead of loading the seperate MS Windows Embedded, the quickplay buttons above the laptop keyboard just act like the power button and boot up Vista and then start QPW once Vista is booted up. This is obviously not ideal for those that want to get to their music fast and without all the pretense of the entire OS.
So, for those that are industrious enough to tackle the inner workings of your computer. You can repartition your drives and do a clean XP install. That is exactly what I did... and using a number of good guides that are referenced on this board... I was quickly up and running with a clean XP install and all drivers loaded.
Now, on to installing QPD. Again, there are a number of good references on this... including this very forum. But, I did find one that seems like a treasure trove of all things quickplay: http://www.notebookforums.com/thread141817.html. (http://www.notebookforums.com/thread141817.html.)
There are a myriad of things you must do, including creating a second primary partition at the end of your drive. Not to mention obtaining the QPD software. Since those with Vista installed at the factory do not have the QPD software in their SWSetup folder, they have to relay on finding it off the web. A good resource for that turns out to be this web site: http://www.asifism.com. Don't worry... he seems to update the keys every once in a while.
And now, the fun part... I have the software installed... a brand new partition containing MS Windows Embedded... and I must reboot to finish.
OH NO: ***STOP: 0x0000007B  ... ... :(
Now what! Well... here's the perverbial wall. As some have mentioned on other posts... the lastest HP notebooks do not have a way to turn on native support for SATA drives via the BIOS. The XP Installation threads contain details on this, but basically in order to install XP... you have to slipstream the SATA drivers into the XP Install CD using a program called nLite.
Well.... The blue screen error 0x0000007B is detailed here on MS's website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103. Basically.... I think MS Windows embedded is running into the same problem that the XP installation CD does.... there is no native support for the SATA drive on the dv6500 laptop. So, when the OS attempts to boot... it craps out on actually reading the disk and thinks there's no hard disk (referred to around the board as getting a BSOD).
So, I'm looking to you tech people with more experience on XP and driver level implementation. Supposedly XP startup has some initial driver load during its boot process... the idea is that it loads the basic drivers to get the OS boot process started (hard disks, etc.)... and then the rest continues until you're at the login screen. My best guess is that XP embedded is exactly the same, and requires the dv6500 Intel SATA chipset drivers to be installed (much like they must be slipstreamed into the XP Install CD).
I can gain access to the partition containing the embedded OS to edit files or place new files on it. But, I need help on what to do to install the drivers into the XP Embedded OS so that it uses them on startup and can boot off the drive! This is not a drive partition or MBR issue as the boot process gets far enough down the line to get to the XP Startup screen (the one with the logo and the "working" bar at the bottom). Its at that point you get the blue screen.
Anyway... hope someone can help... or at least keeps anyone else with a dv6500t from killing themselves to get it installed when I don't think it will work without further investigation!
Thanks!

rodney and others,
Thanks for all that info!
You have relieved me as I was worried that my notebook for defective which of course it is but at least it is part of a population. I've had this dv6375 for about two months and I like it. Of course one reason I chose HP was for the QuickPlay buttons...
I am about to buy another notebook and think I might go with Dell (perhaps a 1520) because it looks like your fixes are way more then I want to get involved with. (computer dummy you know). Of course if HP would FIX the issue, I might reconsider.
What a bummer... another product that doesn't work as advertised!

Hi all,
I've just read 56 pages.I have a problem with my eyes now:)
Is there anyone able to use direct versions of quickplay(bootable ones not the windows applications) with dv4289ea?If there is, then what is the bios version? Also, can you explain the install procedure briefly please?
Do I need to install all the files from 1.2>1.3 to 2.3 direct?
Thanks...

Hi!
I have a Compaq V3000 Series and it has Quickplay hotkey. However it does not come with Quickplay Direct and Quick Play for windows. I managed to download those files from Asifism website.
This is what I have done so far to install QuickPlay
1. I did a fresh Windows Vista Home Premium Installation.
2. I created a new partition 1028Mb in size for QuickPlay. I didnt format it and leave it raw.
3. After Windows Installation, I changed the 1028Mb drive name to X:\ drive as suggested.
4. I copy HPQPDP folders which I downloaded earlier from Asifism website to C:\swsetup\
5. Now I try to run setup.exe in HPQPDP but an error message came out saying that my computer doesn't have QuickPlay hotkey.
I believe this is the similar problem to Stimey. Someone in this thread mentioned that the Compaq comouter could not install because it is not purchased north America. But it can overcome by creating a regedit to trick the computer to install HPQPDP. I think Stimey mentioned in the thread that I should create a Regedit file using the following codes:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\QPFlag]
"QPFlag"=dword:00000003
"QPPLatform"="V3000"
But the downside is it will ruined your hard drive as claimed by a couple of users (somewhere in pg 35-36). Something about SATA error which I have no idea as it is too technical.
I am affraid to go thorugh those installation as it will ruin my hard drive. I am wondering are there any Compaq V3000 Series owners successfully install QuickPlay Direct. I have through 56 pages of this thread and didn't see anyone claim to install HPQPDP successfully.
I would be much appreicated if someone could guide me how to install the HPQPDP. I really want it to work.
Massive thanks to all the contributer.

Many thanks to all the contributors in this forum.
But I'm pleading if there is anyone who can help us to succeed in configuring the Quickplay for COMPAQ PRESARIO V3000 Series pls. do it urgently.
Previously, i'v read a thread about SATA drives, after a lot of struggle I reach the stage where quickplay partition will begin to log into windows, but a second after it will just crashed into the the Blue Screen. The thread I read where someone propose setting some SATA settings in the system BIOS, however, this is not the case in my COMPAQ PRESARIO V3000 Series because BIOS does'nt indicate any Device Configuration where u can set the SATA native mode. I also noticed that SATA native mode activation requires use of Intel Chipset Drivers for the IDE/ATAPI whatever, Compaq Presario V3000 uses AMD Processor with NVidia chipset. In short all my effort ended there with nothing more to doo.........
Pls could any one help?

hi isch, i had the same problem but now i know how to fix it:) i'll start from the begining, maybe these informations will help someone else.
first thing is a number of partitions we have on the disk. i had C (primary), D E F G (logical disks on extended partition). i've resized last partition so the free space after all of this partitions was 1gb (1027mb) but every time i started setup, the 5% error occured. i tried to format this 1gb space, left it unallocated etc. but nothing helped. someone in earlier post (sorry i can't find it now) wrote that maximum number of partitions is 4 so i merged E, F and G into one bigger partition with letter E. with this partitioning the setup went ok but after reboot there was that blank black screen which are you isch talking about... i've checked boot.ini file (method with mapping described in earlier post) on the X partition created by quickplay and there was line:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS
there's 'partition(4)' because i have 3 partition before partition X so this is all right.
only restoring the original xp's MBR helped to normally run xp. while installer was running i saw strange thing in the window where are all partitions listed:
C Partition1........
D Partition3........
E Partition4........
F Partition2........ (this is quickplay's 1gb partition)
as you can see quickplay's partition has number 2, not 4:| i think that primary partitions are numbered first and then logical disks on extended partitions. so i converted in partition magic all logical partitions to primary, installed quickplay again and after reboot quickplay partition booted:) i've checked numbering of partitions in xp installer and now everything was ok:)
but it's not the end of the story...:/ there was next problem... quickplay's partition booted but one second after xp logo showed strange error occured. it looked like blue screen of death in w98, severe error or something, i don't remember. after many experiments i found that the reason was disabled 'SATA native mode' in bios, so i enabled it. quickplay started without any problems, initialized and after reboot the same blue screen showed but while loading normal xp FUUUUUUUCK !?!?!?!?!?!?! i didn't know what's going on. on enabled 'sata native' quickplay worked good, xp crashed. and on disabled 'sata native' quickplay crashed and xp worked good:| on the net i've found document which described how to install sata drivers on hp's notebooks. i tried it and... EVERYTHING WORKS FINE NOW:)
this document you can download from:
http://www.excray.republika.pl/SATA.RTF
geeeeez it took me whole week to install this f*** quickplay;)
maybe these infromations will help someone.
now i'd like to install quickplay for windows but i can't download the files from megaupload.
can someone upload it somewhere else, PLEAAASE???:) thanks:)
SORRY for my english;)

Ok. I'm only new to this whole Quickplay direct thing. Part of me regrets blowing out the XP Home installation that came w/ my Compaq Presario V3000 laptop. But the good news is, b4 I formatted the laptop, I backed up my swsetup folder and have my original c:\swsetup\hpqpd folder. It's about 800 megs. I'm willing to RAR it up and put it on one of my Linux servers sitting on a 10mbps connection, if it gets too slow, I can put it on a few more servers, some with 10mbps and some with 100mbps. I don't see what's the big deal about offering it to people who have HP/Compaq laptops.
Before I upload it though, I need help myself. It's quite simple really, I created the 1024mb partition at the end of the drive, didn't format it as NTFS, assigned it Drive letter X, and installed QuickPlay direct. It installs fine within Windows, then reboots the computer. Computer boots up into the QuickPlay partition, and it does it's own thing, detecting my video card, sound card, etc. and that goes through smoothly as well. Then it reboots. Now it boots back into my regular Windows. Ok, shutdown the laptop, try the QuickPlay button, and it still boots into my regular Windows, sigh, so close. So there is no way for me to get back into quickplay direct, I've read through the forums and understand modifying my boot.ini will be useless. So how do I make it active? I tried that stupid program on HP's website, the one to make the quickplay boot thing work again, but executing their exe only brings up a windows error about doing it via the control panel or something. Useless. So if somebody can help me get this working, I'll release the software to anybody who asks. I may not want to put a direct link here. Least not for now.
Some extra info, if you don't like long posts, you can skip this section. First off, I have no idea what version of QuickPlay Direct shipped w/ my laptop. I have the directory, but looking through the ini's and getting the properties of the executables doesn't really tell me what version it is. I thought at one point it was QuickPlay 2.1, but apparently the only versions of QuickPlay direct are 2.0 and 2.3; Optimally I'd like 2.3, but if this is 2.0, whatever, it's what shipped w/ my laptop and I know it to work 100% with my laptop. Nothing crazy about SATA drivers and sound not working, only playing DVD's, etc.
What I want to know more about is how that QuickPlay button actually works. Does it tell the BIOS to set the secondary partition active? Then if you boot off the regular power button, the first partition is automatically reset to active by the BIOS?
During some... crazy... experimentation, I used Acronis TrueImage. So I created the x:\ as 1024, unformatted, installed the QuickPlay Direct. Then, when it went to reboot my laptop, I booted off TrueImage and made a complete image of my hard drive, including the MBR. Then, I let it boot into QuickPlay Direct, detect the video/sound/etc. and then let it reboot back into regular windows. Of course the quickplay button won't get me back into that stupid partition. So, I booted off TrueImage, and restored the MBR. Now when I boot up, I get into QuickPlay Direct :-) However, the snag is, I can't get back into regular Windows! Normal boots, and boots via the QuickPlay button, bring me into QuickPlay direct all the time. So I booted off a linux cd and noticed that the secondary partition was the only one marked as Bootable. So I untag it as bootable, and tag the first partition (my main windows) as bootable, and reboot. No luck, still goes into QuickPlay direct. When I reboot off the Linux CD, I find that the 1st partition is no longer tagged as bootable and the 2nd one is. The MBR keeps undoing what I'm doing. Anyways, kind of frustrating. I'll have to delete the QuickPlay Direct partition, boot off my XP cd and run the fixmbr and fixboot commands. Should fix it. But I am learning more about the internals of QuickPlay Direct and partitions.
What I find interesting is that if the 2nd partition, the quickplay direct partition, is marked active and bootable, it boots into QuickPlay direct. I was thinking about using something like Partition Magic's PQBoot, if I couldn't get that quickplay button to work. PQBoot allows you to select different partitions to boot off of at boot time. So I should in theory be presented w/ a PQBoot menu on bootup, asking which partition I want to boot. I could then select the 1st partition and boot regular Windows, or the 2nd partition and boot QuickPlay Direct. Kind of a manual way around that button. Then other thoughts occur, why does it have to be QuickPlay Direct in that partition, eventually I'd think about one of those really small Linux distro's they make for USB sticks, that will boot up and allow you to play DVD's, view images, play music, etc. and it does it under 20 megs, which is smaller than QuickPlay direct and it boots up quicker. Since QuickPlay direct is being phased out, if I could get that stupid button working right, I could put a different specialized OS in that 2nd partition. I'd like to be able to hit the QuickPlay button and boot into a stripped down Linux DVD player, or something like that.; could even play Divx's mp3's mp4's, avi's, etc. But that's later on down the line.
For now I just want my QuickPlay Direct to work via that stupid button. I'm like 90% there. Is it the BIOS version? I'm running the latest BIOS for the V3019US laptop, F.34; I dislike the idea of downgrading BIOS's just to make a button work. I wonder what bug fixes I'll lose. The laptop is about 1 year old, and shipped w/ XP Home installed originally. I tried Vista on this laptop a month ago and almost killed myself, Vista sucks, it's slow, it's crappy, the interface is more confusing, QuickPlay Direct won't work on it, etc. so I formatted the whole damn thing and put a clean install of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 on it. I was going to buy XP Pro but decided if I'm bound to run XP, minus well buy/run the latest release of XP. Any help please.

Hi there, I felt i'v to congratulate u for having successfully restore ur quickplay direct on V3000 machine, In an effort to fix your problem, here is a copy of my C: drive's boot.ini file, for sure it can help u choose from any of the partitions u may like to boot from. I'd like to know if your Notebook is American model or NOT. Mine is a Chinese model also bought it last year, but I accidently lost all the recovery partition. Right now I tried both Quickply 2.0 and 2.3 but after install the machine fails to reboot in to quickplay partition for completing the rest of the installation. In fact I'v to use a registry fix before the machine allow me to begin the quickplay setup.
For your booting problem I recomend you try setting ur boot.ini file way...

About the version of your QPD, I guess is version 1.x, as a check, you can try booting into the quickplay partition if it begin by showing a Windows Logo at the startup then it is Version 2.x ELSE It is a Linux Based which is Version 1.x.
By the way, I'm FLEEDING to you to please post us a link where we can download your copy of QPD quickplay direct, i think it is the only version that can fit our kind of machine (V3000).
Thank you in advance, wishing u more enjoyement from your wonderful V3000 PC.

Well I've sort of figured it out, but I'm not happy about it. First off, I've learned that I have QuickPlay Direct 2.1. I'd kind of like to try 2.3, but I suspect that 2.1 was 'designed' for this particular series of laptop. The problems I read about, regarding SATA hard drives and/or sound not working, I suspect it has to do with using the wrong version of QuickPlay on the wrong hardware. So as much as I'd like to try 2.3, I suspect that 2.1 will work better. I may try 2.3 later on down the line, but 2.1 works fine on my laptop, kind of. btw... I have an American version, course it's all made in China :-)
I've determined the problem. It's the damn BIOS. I'm running F.34; I downgraded to F.13 (the next release was F.22 and the notes say they 'added support for Vista' which since I know QuickPlay Direct doesn't work in Vista, I suspected HP/Compaq changed the way the button would work), re-ran the installation in Windows, let it reboot into QuickPlay, let it detect my hardware, let it reboot me into regular windows. Then I shut down and hit the quickplay button. This time, it brought me into QuickPlay. I was happy and upset at the same time. Great, now it works, but I have to use a BIOS 3 versions old. I tried to upgrade from F.13 to F.22, the next one up, to see how far I could get b4 the button didn't work, and it didn't even work with F.22; So now it appears that if I want QuickPlay Direct to work, I have to stay on F.13, which I'm not happy about.
I'm currently investigating my other options, such as using PQBoot or some other boot loader to switch between active/primary partitions. I may have to be content w/ when my laptop first turns on, it presents me w/ a quick Menu about regular Windows or QuickPlay Direct. I may have to ignore that stupid button.
I'm going to try your boot.ini trick, I keep reading that it'll give me a BSOD, but I've never actually tried it, maybe I'll get lucky.
Anyways, if you have a V3000, I'd recommend trying QuickPlay Direct 2.1, trying to run 2.3 may be the problem. I can get you my copy, send me a private message and I'll get you a link where u can d/l it.

Thank you very much once again for notifying me about the BIOS issue, I also upgraded my BIOS from F.13 to F.34 all in search to get quickplay works. I did that because my quickplay button does'nt respond when the computer is powered off even after installing quickplay 2.0 or 2.3.

BINGO! Forget booting off that quickplay button, the latest BIOS changes the way that button works (to make it 'vista' compatible, which doesn't support QuickPlay Direct).
Since I wanted to run the latest BIOS, I decided I'd have to find a new way into QuickPlay Direct 2.1; I've succeeded in booting QuickPlay via Windows XP's boot menu.
Step 1: Modify your boot.ini to something similar to mine:
-----
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="MS Windows XP MCE 2005" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="HP QuickPlay 2.1" /fastdetect /maxmem=256
-----
But naturally, when you try to use that 2nd boot option, you get a BSOD as it's booting that version of Windows.
Step 2: Download the 'Restoring HP QuickPlay Boot' file (sp34444.exe) from HP's support website and attempt to install it. If your like me, you'll get some kind of error about the control panel, ignore it. Now load up a command prompt (start/run/cmd) and go to c:\swsetup\sp3444 and run 'mbrinst.exe /ini mbr.ini' This will bring up a nice little window, now I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing in here, but I do know what options I've selected to make it work. On my laptop, I've deleted the HP Recovery partition, it'd only restore XP Home which I have no intention of going back to, so I only really have 2 partitions, the main one, and the HP QuickPlay partition, no recovery. So I left 'none' checked under Force Start, under 'Recovery Partition' I selected 'Is part of user Partition' left the Timeout at 1, Left the QPlay option checked, and under "Partition Table" I clicked on "User part first" (I think this is the most important part), then clicked on Install.
Step 3: I booted off a Linux CD (in my case, a Gentoo LiveCD), and used 'fdisk /dev/sda' to set both partitions to Bootable, and I set them both as type 07, which is NTFS. So now that QuickPlay partition is no longer hidden, and it's toggled as bootable, just like the regular windows partition. Both are identical now.
So I go to reboot, and the Windows XP menu is displayed. I selected the HP QuickPlay option from the XP menu, and sure enough, it booted the QuickPlay Mini-Windows w/o any BSOD's. I think the BSOD's and hal.dll problem is due to the partition type (being hidden) and it not being set bootable. I kept setting it unhidden/ntfs and setting it bootable, but whenever I tried booting off of it, it'd blue screen and it'd also re-hide itself and re-unset itself bootable. I figured out Step 2 above (using mbrinst.exe) kept it from re-making itself hidden and not-bootable.
So now, when I boot up, I get the option of my Regular Windows MCE, or my HP QuickPlay. Now I've got the latest BIOS adnd I'll still get the battery-saving performance that I wanted out of QuickPlay Direct in the first place. I just won't be able to use that button, but it's a minor inconvenience.
So to recap my findings, if you want that button to work, you'll have to use BIOS F.13 or older, nothing newer. Then create that blank/unformatted partition at the end, install QuickPlay, let it do its thing, etc. then in theory that button will work.
If you want the latest BIOS, F.22 or newer, you'll have to find another way into QuickPlay Direct, which I've done by setting the QuickPlay Direct partition as NTFS (not that hidden/unknown/stealth partition type) and setting it as bootable just like the primary partition. Then you can modify your boot.ini to boot off the QuickPlay partition. You know, if you can dual boot Vista and XP, I've seen where you can add XP into Vista's boot menu, I imagine you can use this same trick. Just add the QuickPlay option to the boot.ini of vista, do that mbrinst.exe thing, set the partition as NTFS and bootable (have to use linux's fdisk) and bingo, it should work.
Thanks go to linusl's post on page 42 of this forum/thread. His post got me 90% there. hxxp://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?postid=2530532#post2530532

I don't think Windows little disk management thing will be enough. You have to change the partition type as well, and set it bootable. You'd be better off downloading a knoppix or gentoo or CentOS (or any other distro's livecd/install cd. Most of them will let you run regular linux commands b4 the installation. I know that knoppix/centos/gentoo will definately let you run fdisk w/o any problems and w/o forcing you to install linux. You have to do:
fdisk /dev/sda
p
t
2
07
a
2
w
q
p will print out the current partition table. If you're like me, you'll have 2 partitions, 1 big one and 1 little one.
t will set the type, it will ask for which partition, I selectd '2' for the 2nd partition, the QuickPlay partition. Enter type 07.
a will toggle a partition bootable, I selected partition 2 (my QuickPlay partition).
w will write the partition table to disk.
q will quit.
Then just reboot. I'll email you shortly a link for the software. Gotta rar it up and then upload it to one of my servers. Remember it's only QuickPlay 2.1, not 2.3, but it seems to be what is suited to the V3000 series. It detects all my hardware perfectly and does what it's supposed to do.
I'll definately try this option, though i don't have the linux boot cd but i can change the quickplay partition to an active partition from the windows Disk Management. I wish to be successfull this time around.

Hi deon,
It is sad to inform you that after following all the elaborated detailed procedure u provided, my notebook fail to pick up and complete the installation after reboot. Even after all partition management via knoppix the QPD partition still crashes into a BSoD.
I guess the Reason is mainly because my notebook is a chinese model while yours is American, It's model no. is V3142AU and shipped with AMD Turion X2 Processor not Intel which i think is also part of the reasons for this failure. I notice while QPD installation is running it installs many supports for Intel based applications. my PC is AMD not Intel. Oh my God!
I don't know what to do now, in fact I lost all hope and I know that I have to give up and Surrender.
Before then, I'd like to thank all the contributors to this forum and specifically U Bingo.
Thank you All.

Hello, I just got a new HP DV 2617us with pre-installed vista home premium. Unfortunately, it did not come with HPQPDP folder in SWSETUP. I want to load QuickPlay 2.3 Direct. Is there any place I can get HPQPDP folder as zip, rar or torrent? The megaupload/rapidshare/depositfile links are long dead. I am waiting for access-key for download on the asifism.com site. Thanks in advance!

Congrats for ur new DV series notebook, but i want u to know that quickplay 2.3 direct is windows XP based, so if u really like to enjoy it u've to downgrade from Vista to XP. I personally don't have a server to upload it for u now, yet I can help u in this way:
Write a kind of private email to this guy and request him for a link to donwload the QPD 2.3 file. I believe he'll help u with it.

Good luck!

OK, a kind soul let me download HPQPDP folder. However when I follow installation steps, once the C:\SWSETUP\HPQPDP\Setup.exe installation completes and vista reboots, it puts me in system recovery mode. Anyone else saw this or has any idea how to fix this, please let me know. Thanks!

Has anyone been able to get this working on an Intel-based dv9500? I've attempted it a couple of times, and I always end up with the blue screen.
There's no option to disable the SATA in any of the BIOs versions that I can install; is there another BIOS (maybe for an Intel-based dv9000) that I can use that won't brick the motherboard?
I picked up this notebook with the intention of using QuickPlay Direct on it fairly often to keep the kids occupied; I'd rather they not boot the machine up completely to watch a movie. I had no idea that this didn't work on Vista; the buttons were still there and HP didn't go out of their way to advertise that the feature had been hobbled.
I'm pretty sure that the hardware is completely compatable, but I'm hesitant to go to extreme means that may render it inoperable.
If this is a SATA driver issue, is there any way to "slipstream" the SATA drivers into the QuickPlay Direct partition without having to boot into it first? Somthing as simple as copying drivers into the correct location and adding some pointer?

None of the laptops I have tested and helped others were on a SATA drive. I suspect HP has finally switched to this interface. Unfortunately the drivers and installation routines I have for XP and Vista are for PATA drives. Also, if your laptop has HD audio, that would cause it to fail using what I have. I still am looking for someone with the install routine on a HD audio laptop. I wish I could help.

I'm uploading another link (Rapidshare as well) so that in case one link goes bad, another is up as well. I'll update this post with links as they come. Thanks.

-----
[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
Thanks a lot for a most useful post.
I wanted to make a fresh installation of WinXP MCE on my Pavilion dv2166eu laptop using the key on the COA sticker, and avoiding all the "customization" made by HP on their restore disks, and also use the latest BIOS yet keep QuickPlay.
With your help this is now possible :dance2:
Pity HP decided to "castrate" their laptops for the sake of Vista compatibility (Which I think is not a compatibility but a licensing issue. QuickPlay runs on a dumbed down version of XP. If there's no XP license on the laptop, no chance of legally running it. A solution would be a Linux based QuickPlay 3.x. But then they would have to make the source available, and we all know not many companies are keen on doing so, some of them (did I hear Inventel?) even breaching the license agreement with total impunity, because no lawsuits will ever be filled against them because of it. Talk about double standards in the industry lol).

By the way, apparently the "glitch" of the QuickPlay button booting you into Windows has been fixed in the F.37 and up BIOSes.
Unfortunately there's no F.37 (yet?) for my notebook.
I got this info just by searching the US HP site for the word "QuickPlay"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?docname=c01179494&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&dlc=en&lang=en
Apparently it affects the entire dv2000 series laptops (AMD and Intel based alike) and some Compaq laptops as well.
EDIT: There's F.37 BIOS for my notebook, but I found the link on the HP Korean site. It does indeed fix the issue. And no, it doesn't put the BIOS in Korean language ^^
http://h50177.www5.hp.com/support/RZ869PA/solve/76327.html
Dates back to August this year, so no idea why it hasn't been made available through other HP websites. It makes me wonder now which BIOS version is the current one lol. I can't read Korean, and finding the appropriate file was kind of a shot in the dark. There was also a F.39 BIOS, but this one was for Intel based systems.
Next step: Try to apply the update available on the CyberLink web site to the QuickPlay partition... more to come lol.
EDIT2: The update available from CyberLink updates both the windows and the standalone version of QuickPlay. So, now I have a fully functional QuickPlay partition. Yay!

The link is there, but for some reason it doesn't work for me either. What I did was right click it, select "properties" and extract the direct link to the file from there.
For AMD based laptops is:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp36501-37000/sp36670.exe
Make sure your laptop series is mentioned on the list in the bottom of the page.
I've an inkling there's also a F.39 BIOS for AMD systems, but all the info I can find is in some eastern language I can't understand ;(
And with the traditional non-meaningful naming scheme of the files, finding it in the HP/Compaq ftp is just too much for my patience.
EDIT: By the way, the correct expression is "Downgrade to VISTA" ;) You get new and shiny at the expense of everything else :P But hey, each to their own...
EDIT2: By the way, after applying the QuickPlay update that's available from CyberLink, the first time you boot into the QPD partition you may be greeted by an error message complaining about not being able to reserve space for the hibernation file.
It's all right. Just switch off the laptop by pressing the "ON" button, take the power cord and the battery out, leave it a few seconds, put battery and power cord in, and boot into the QPD partition again. It will rebuild the hibernation file when you exit and everything will be good and dandy.
