A friend and I have started fooling around with Linux on our computers, I've got my laptop on the way from RawpowerPC (http://www.rawpowerpc.com/laptop-49-MSI-1013.php). I'll be trying out Ubuntu cuz it's really popular and theres a lot of support for it out there.

MSI MS1013 - 12.1"
AMD Turion 64 MT-40 (2.2ghz)
2gb PC3200 RAM
80gb 7200rpm hard drive
Intel 2200BG Wifi card
ATI Radeon® Xpress 200M (yeah, I know, ATI sucks on Linux, oh well)

Biggest task will be getting that wireless working, as i haven't been able to get it to work on my friend's laptop yet. But we're just learning how to use linux, install programs, and use BASH. I'm sure I'll be posting more questions here soon enough.

Wireless shouldn't be a problem with that card...

I agree, you shouldn't have any trouble with that wireless card. My 2195ABG in my sager 3880 worked right out of the box in FC5. What wireless card is your friend using? I had (have sort of) an old emachine 5310 with one of the broadcoms in it. Before the machine died, I had intermittant luck with it (I couldn't change transfer rate and wep was sketchy at times).

Good luck, hope you enjoy it. Linux is definitely the way to go. If you absolutely need a windows fix, try emulation. I run Windows XP Pro (a reasonably stripped version, but fully functional) on VMWare. And when it's in full screen mode, you wouldn't even know it was on top of linux.
