keyboard probs with travelmate 650

i juz acquired this laptop from my sis who upgraded to a newer laptop. after doin a system restore, and completely stock with factory settings, it works fine. but now it seems dat my keyboard and trackpad stops functioning. in light to this alert (http://global.acer.com/support/windows/win-xp-sp2.htm), it may have something to do with windows updates. but im kida sure dat it wasnt SP2 dat i juz dloaded and installed. currently my settings are to automatically download but manually install. should i chage it? but wat should i update and wat shouldnt i? cos i still dont know wat causes the kboard and track pad to freeze. a usb mouse seems to work ok, have not tried with a usb kboard tho.

the first thing i did was to upgrade my bios.

ouh yeah, forgot to add.... it juz wont reboot or shut down everscince the kboard and trackpad problem. it just hangs at a blue screen and says, "Windows is shutting down"
but in never does
