Have'nt been on here for about a year! Anywho, still got my Aspire 1705 smi, full 17" screen, 1gb ram (from 512), 128 dedicated graphics, 120gb desktop harddrive, 3.06 deasktop pentium 4 cpu, and floppy drive! All i've had to do was change the mini wireless card, and the battery, which only lasts 1 hour on full charge! It may be old, but it still kicks bottom :-)

1gb ram (from 512)
Was the 1gb a choice based on needs and cost or is it the actual limit for this machine?
Even after several years, this notebook rocks! To keep it rolling for an additional year or two, I've decided to upgrade it. So, I've searched for several months for memory upgrades for my Acer 1705 Smi, and I am still puzzled about the "maximum memory" issue. Currently I've reached a dead end:
ACER technical department and tech support documents clearly state that the machine is upgradable to 2GB (2x1GB) and this is consistent with the machine's original specifications.
Acer points and regional sales suggest that only 1GB can be installed (2x512MB). Some acer points even insisted that 512MB SODIMMs as the only compatible choice, based on the notebook S/N (which naturally made me doubt their 1GB statement as well).
System scan tools show that the memory controller can only handle 1GB (2x 512MB modules). Perhaps the most worrying finding...
Major memory manufacturers (e.g. Kingston) officialy replied that 2x512MB is the max configuration (and only with PC2100! How accurate can that info be?...hmm)
Major memory retailers offer 2x1GB kits for a total of 2GB for the specific model and guarantee the compatibility for the specific model (though that does not prove anything)
The system came with a 512MB 184pin Nanya PC2700 333 CL2.5 DDR DIMM preinstalled, so at least a similar sized compatible module should work, giving a total of 1GB. But what about the 2GB specs?Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sometimes you just have to test yourself to find out...
So, some - hopefully usefull - info in case someone is still using this great notebook:
The standard 1705SMi model (DIMM based) does support 2 GB of memory!
Kingston ValueRAM 1GB modules seem to work fine (2x1GB = 2GB total)
Benchmarks give the earlier (512MB) values or even slightly worse figures (!). Noticeable performance improvement is found in the unloading of "heavy" programs (after closing them).
Some benchmarks from PC wizard 2007:
Processor 1130-1150
Cache 19500-19900
Memory 1950-1980 (sometimes 4000+)
Video 400-405
HDrive 67-68
P.S. anyone getting better video performance with newer drivers than the original (2004) for Go5600 ?
