Hi there!

I'm thinking of buying the new Acer 8204 as it has everything I want and need. I was going to buy the Sony Vaio FE11S but I heard their support sucks, don’t supply drivers CDs with their product and their website is incomplete for drivers downloads etc. Hence, I’m now thinking of Acer 8204 and would like to know if anyone can help me on these things before I go ahead with my purchase:-

- in most reviews they said 8204 on the right side gets hot and give an uncomfortable feeling? I’ve been using Dell Inspiron 2650 for a long time now and it’s time for a change. I have never encountered this kind of problem with Dell. How true is this? And how hot does it get?

- has Acer got a good support and website? I live in the Netherlands and I have no idea what their after sales support is like.

- what is the FAT32 and NTFS? (as you can see I know nothing about laptops....very ignorant and naive). I read that these days most people go for NTFS so what is the difference between them?

- does anyone know if 8204 comes with backups drivers, manual, etc?

i just moved from a dell inspiron pentium M to an acer 3624 with an amd centrino and its SO much cooler. i think it has a lot to do with the processor. my dell was super hot on the top right of the keyboard, and the acer gets more hot on the bottom right, but overall, its cooler. my .02

The heat comes from the components... its not the MFR's fault. If the graphics card is on the right side it might get a little warm. I havn't heard anything specifically bad about the 8204... but search the acer forums for reviews for more detailed info

Hard Drive Partition formats. FAT32 is semi-outdated. NTFS is equally terrible, but its the windows standard. If your going to be using winxp, it'll automatically setup ntfs.

It'd shock me if a retail model did'nt.

my acer did not come with backup cds, but you were prompted to make them once you booted up the first time. it equated to 1 dvd or 4 cd-roms... cheapos! (or rather i was cheap buying a 650 dollar laptop ;)

I just want to say this to you ZGold550, Sony too do not come with backup cds. I think most laptops these days don't come with these.

reca, can you tell me if there was a manual supplied by acer? Is your acer a 8204 and how are you enjoying it?

Does anyone know if there's a good acer website where one can download drivers, information, etc?

Acer 8204

I love mine, but read the other threads on it because some folks aren't happy.

No CD's. There's a recovery partition and a utility to use to make a copy of the factory configuration to DVDs. You can also take snapshots of the system with this utility later on.

There is a manual, but it's pretty sparse compared to what I'm used to from Fujitusu.

There is some heat vented off to the right. I find that my hand is closer to me than the vent is, so it doesn't bother me.

It's a very snappy performer.
