I installed Debian (network install)
you need to boot with
libata.atapi_enabled=1
option to find the cd-rom
ftp.debian.org went down during the install, so i had to change targets and do some extra work. I just installed the standard system.
The latest kernel 2.6.16-smp fixes acpi issues and show no errors. I will need to recompile to get dynamic freq support.
Right now the ati driver is working with KDE, so that big hurdle is down. Getting around 1200 fps in fgl_glxgears -fbo
Next up WiFi and CPU freq control. Later XGL+Compiz 3D desktop.
I am sure most distro's will add these drivers in short order, so that should make things easier for most. Luckily I had some help on hand to get this far.

does this mean you now have full opengl functionality ?

I dont know about full functionality, I have not installed XGL/Compiz (because once you do, your stuck with it) to test 3D desktop. Nor have I installed any games. But as I said above fgl_glxgears runs, as does some of the open gl screensavers bundled with KDE.
The last driver I "need" to get working is WiFi and unfortuneately there doesn't seem to be a working one. The problem has to do with the "software switch" that powers the card. Until that works, its really not useable - for me anyway.
I am hoping development will start to pick up now that the video card has some support.

Apparently WISTRON_BTNS is included (as a module) in the kernel from 2.6.15 on, but it fails to load
I tried acerhk - for "hot key", no longer in development and that did not work
Then I tried acer_acpi, which is probably the best chance at working but although the module compiled and installed fine, also failed failed to load.
I am going to try and get bluetooth going to see if there is a similar problem.

OK, a little down time works wonders. I got WiFi working today.
The problem was the latest ipw3945 drivers (0.0.74) was not compiling, so for some reason instead of using 0.0.73, I used the intel's stable driver which does not work. 0.0.73 does compile and does work nicely, but there is patch to make 0.0.74 compile http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=10156035&forum_id=47844 though i have not tried it.
Just download http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ipw3945/ipw3945-0.0.73.tgz?download untar and follow the instructions in INSTALL, i am using the ieee80211-1.1.13 subsystem even though INSTALL references v1.1.12
I am using WEP at work, I'll try WPA when i get home.
Bluetooth is also working "out of the box", but i have not tried to pair anything to it.
I have decided to wait on the XGL stuff until there is a cleaner install method, maybe the next Korrora live CD will support the x1000 series and we can all try it out easily ;)
