Anyone else think the Ferrari 4006's screen has a horrid viewing angle? Even my crappy Dell D600 had a better viewing angle...the Sony SZ I returned for this of course had an even more amazing viewing angle. What's up with this LCD? Other than the viewing angle it's great.
Does it use the 15.4" CrystalBrite technology? If so, my one isnt so bad (Acer 1644), the worst viewing angle is probably from above, although directly on and the sides seem fine.

If I go about 30-45 degrees off of dead on then the contrast goes to hell. If someone else is looking at the screen it makes a big difference. I have no idea if it uses CrystalBrite I will look into that.

Anyone know if Acer plans to do anything about this? Apparently the 4005 has the same problem as well.

Aside from viewing angle, the contrast is also shite. Return it if you can!!

I (and passengers on the 6.45am train to the airport) had a great time watching DOOM: The movie and not one complaint about the viewing angle. If anything, I would prefer a better privacy style screen. :)

The Ferrari came in at least two resolutions, WXGA (1280x800)(gloss) and WSXGA (1680x1050)(matte). For each of those, I believe there were several suppliers/screen models. The one we are referring to specifically is the WSXGA Quanta QD15AL02.

I bought my laptop at CompUSA with the warranty that covers virtually everything. Think they can help me? Or would Acer be a better bet? The LCD is just blah.

I really don't know.... as of today I've flushed AUD$630 down the drain and not fixed the problem. Here's what I've done, so nobody else makes the same mistakes:
- Assumed Acer wouldnt bother replacing the screen since there was nothing wrong with it... or hang on to it for a few weeks and return it with the same model screen, or maybe untouched. I have since learned that only Samsung LTN154P1-L02 screens are in their database as Ferrari 4006 parts... So maybe I should have tried. :(
- Decided to take the risk with screentekinc.com and get a gloss upgrade done thinking it would fix the contrast/viewing angle problems. Did jack all really, made the screen brighter, more gamma, but not much else. The screen they sent back initially was so white it was unusable, you had to look at it from an oblique angle to make things out. I sent it back and they did something (changed the polarizer?) and the resulting screen was comparably crap to what i started with. AUD$280 (AUD$100 shipping there, US$100 for upgrade, plus shipping back) down, back to square one. :(
- Couldn't find a definitive source or model number of WSXGA gloss screens anywhere. Was hard to find local suppliers of any LCDs, repair center would require 2-6 weeks to order the LCD in. Decided to downgrade -- i've seen reported in a couple of places the 4006 to come in 1280x800 CrystalBrite flavour -- to WXGA high-gloss high contrast/brightness screen, Samsung LTN154X1-L04 (Took another risk, hoping that it would work, my research (wrongly?) suggested that the plugs for video (30-pin) and backlight/inverter (2-pin) were interchangeable). Bought for US$240 brand new on Ebay, plus US$40 for shipping. Doesn't work. :cursing: :cursing: Looking closely at the specs of the LCD, looks like this one is a 1 channel LVDS screen while WSXGAs are 2-channel LVDS. Research suggests that all samsung WXGA screens are 1ch LVDS. So right now I'm trying to figure out if there's any way to get this confounded screen to work, or whther to conclude i've thrown away another AUD$350. Almost back to square one again...
:( :(
My advice is to cut your loss and sell your unmolested laptop and buy another one. Try before you buy. Thankyou so much Acer. I suppose it's my fault though, I'll never buy another laptop without trying it out in store, regardless of company discounts that may try to persuade me otherwise.

I know I get one free LCD replacement through CompUSA. Is the latest 4006 screen better?
