Hi, I recently found this forum looking for Acer information. This site is awesome! I am older with none of the brilliance of younger techies so the articals were very helpful.
I just purchase a Acer Aspire 1712smi lap top that Microsoft donated to a non-profit for $1,000. It was purchased originally by them in Italy and has no warranty. It hasn’t been used and came with a impressive software bundle, Xp pro, Office 2003, Norton (all OEM) but it looked like a good deal anyway and I have stars in my eyes that I could get some like this for the money. (I do lot of gaming). I have MS so many days I am too fatigued to sit at my desk and the portability and can also be used for writing, movies ect. is very appealing to me. But my son the commuter scientist is totally against it. (He is usually against/cautious anything I want because I am on a fixed income.)
I am mostly concerned about it reliably and service/ repair options in the states. This would be my main computer. I have hunted for a place to repair it in Seattle and so far haven’t come up with an Acer repairperson yet. I have read your experiences with Acer service and is scares me. Don’t want to have to send it back to Italy. It took me days to find a manual in English. (Acers site was down for a week.) My son insists that laptop break down frequently and is afraid I would not be able to keep up with it finically.
·It is two years old so would parts be available for it?
Is this model stable?....kinda
·Am I kidding myself or would I be better off with a desktop (I Couldn’t find a multi-media for this price)
·Where would I get it repaired? And a ballpark for labor? HOw much do you spend in two years on repairs?
·Do people really have constant problems w/laptop?
These might be difficult questions/stupid to answer but if you have any thoughts I would appreciate hearing them. Thank you!
Holly
