i think im going back to asus now.... but do any of you have a 5672 that works?

Yeah, it's pretty solid--a few cut corners but generally what I'd expect from a cheap brand. I have no complaints about the performance. Heat may become an issue in the future though.

well since the local store i deal with doesnt have an Asus A8Jm i decided to get a lower model of 5672 the 1GB/100GB XP Pro, at least it doesnt have a toshiba HDD in it. ill give it 1 more chance if not ill just jump off a cliff, theres no way Acer can screw up 3 times in a row... NO WAY....

Why or how did it blow. Overheat?

I guess I'm like every other 5672 owner. There are a couple of issues that turn this NB into a good machine from a great one. One if not the best featured circa $1,000 NBs out there. Heat issues, but I have a couple of HP's that you absolutely cannot put on your lap. Fair screen, seen better on NB's. Dual core. Very good application performance. Fastest HD I've ever used on a NB (what is a 7,200 rpm one like). OK video card for its class. Crummy interface locations, but livable. FAT partitions. There is an official comment on the Acer website that justifies this by saying (after a lot of poetry) …..You can change from FAT32 to NTFS, but not back, so Acer is giving its customers more versatility. WOW. I think Acer won’t spend the extra $20.00 to upgrade their corporate version of Partition Magic to get NTFS. Maybe in next year’s budget.

From what I can tell, its vista aeroglas capable right out of the box. Big plus is that its all ready for the new 64 bit dual core merom chip, the update bios is already out. First laptop I probably won't have to throw away.

What makes the heat issue so apparent is that its right on the palm rest so its getting a lot of chat.

Overall, very good NB in its class. Happy. Yes. Could have been ecstatic.

the first thing i do with any acer laptop is run the backup DVD burn thing so i have a copy of the original OS, then i DBAN the HDD (dariks boot and nuke) to completly wipe out all the garbage, then format it and use my own copy of XP in NTFS. 10GB for OS, 80GB for storage, then whatever is left for ubuntu

anyways the first one the 2GB 5672 with xp home had a toshiba drive, stoped working the first day i got it plus it overheated and bluescreened a couple times. now that i have the 1GB with a hitachi drive it shouldnt be so bad. ill see how it goes, ill do another full review in about 3 hours

all i want is a laptop to work and be reliable.. is that too much to ask for? this is the 3rd acer. ive had 2 asus laptops that have never even bluescreened ONCE in the 1-2.5 years ive been using them. (first asus had for about 1 year, 2nd one i had for about 2.5 years)

The machine is great for it's price. I got it for less than $1000US from newegg. I only got the 1GB version. I had to buy a new version of XP Pro along with it because I needed to upgrade home to pro. I suugest get the extra 1GB ram, since I felt insercure having just 1gb..(personal issue, save for another forum)...

Anyway, heat issues did turn out to be a problem, but I invested in an antec laptop cooler, and it does help the heat quite a bit. If you do upgrade to xp pro, I suggest you use a third party ATI driver. browse the forums for options, I am using the Omegas myself and I have not had a problem for the past week.

All in all, it has great features, the slot loading DVD burner is a dream. Now I know how the Mac Zealots feel. If you factor in the cost of the machine, you can;t really feel bad about owning one of these. However, I must say, if I had some of the troubles that some of the people in this forum have said, I would be absolutely against Acer and their machines.

After some time has passed and an upgrade i'm pretty happy with it. Besides it breaking after 6 days, and being at Acer for 16 days, and them scratching my lid and keeping all my original packaging....

The T2300 was to slow for me. Upgrading to the T2600 was a good move for me considering the price i got it for. It's only a stopgap until Merom hits mainstream. The DVD burner is slow, but then again, it IS a laptop. Slot load is awsome. Video is what i expected, i can't complain about that since i knew what i was getting. The whole FAT32 thing is a moot point for me, i wiped it clean and reinstalled immediatly. Not even a need to backup the original OS, it's complete trash.

I don't care for the audio or USB locations. I would prefer them in the back, with some USB ports on the left hand side. Heat blowing out the right hand side? I mean, who came up with this (must have been someone left handed :)). Speakers suck, but what laptop speakers don't? I could fry eggs on the touchpad. It's almost worthless, plus i hate the grey push button. My emachines had a slider on the right of the pad, was so much more convienent. Webcam is pretty worthless. Only thing it's been good for so far is taking some paint off the base. Apperantly it doesn't rotate while it's closed, and i picked it up in the middle and with my palm it rotated and took a nice chunk of paint out. Personally i would trade the cam for the paint back ;)

Then we come to the real issue, HEAT. We all know this thing runs hot. What i don't understand though, is how come the Dell's that are spec'ed similiar run in the 30C range and don't burn you to touch? This is definetly an issue, and i just hope that later down the road, all this heat doesn't cause parts to fail.

So overall, i guess i'm "happy" with it based solely on its performance. There are a lot of things that could be better.

Only moderately happy. It is a pretty cheap unit, dollar wise and build wise. But you get what you pay for. So from that standpoint, i cant complain too much.

Only moderately happy here too.

This laptop runs great, everything works well, the screen looks great, the wireless is excellent, I actually like my touchpad. The keyboard is spongy but in spite of that is very comfortable to type on. No major issues with build quality except that the plastic around the touchpad buckles a little (hope that doesn't get worse).

Things I don't like: gets HOT, poor placement of USB ports (none work well with a mouse - I wish I had one in the back!), low battery life, DVD burner is extremely slow and desperately needs a firmware upgrade. I'm neutral about the slot-loader: it's neat and clean, but I wish I could use mini-disks and I worry that a disk could get stuck in there.

Personally, I don't care about the FAT32 or Acer softwares either: I can change all that stuff myself without too much hassle.

Overall a good bargain for the $$, but I think I'll shop more wisely the next time I buy a laptop.

for the money, I decided to keep mine. Lots of good features for the price. I thought about other brands, but many have heat issues and poor customer service. I browsed the other manufacturers at the forum and saw other people bitching too.

I will say, at least when I call Acer they speak english. That says something for where I'll spend my dollar. Like Sucka, I'm hoping this thing doesn't do a meltdown 12 months out. I probably won't get an extended wtty. I had a 4 yr on my Toshiba and always agonized about them wiping my drive if I sent it to them, so I usually fixed problems myself. Plus 3 yrs from now, this laptop will be cheap enough or obsolete enough, that I'll be ready for another one.

I've had mine since February and love it! I haven't reformatted, but I have converted the drives to NTFS.

Haven't had one thing (TG) go wrong yet. Am able to play some games I missed over the past few years (Splinter Cell: Pan. Tomorrow, NOLF 2), use Photoshop, send Video Emails, whatever.

The camera is awesome if you go in and uncheck low light. Considering the price, and the fact I was able to get it 2 years w/ no interest from CompUSA for $1250. I also heard the new Macbooks want an extra $500 to go from 1 gig DDR to 2. That's half what I paid for my entire laptop!

AWESOME!
