Hi all. I am new here. I have downloaded and installed the CPU-Z utility and it is telling me that my Gen 2 is only running at 798Mhz although I am using the AC adapter to power my laptop. Here's what the CPU-Z says;

Under Clocks:

Core Speed 798.0 MHz
Multiplier x6
FSB 133.0 MHz
Bus Speed 532.0 MHz

Under Processor:

Name Intel Pentium M 760
Code Name Dothan
Brand ID 22
Package mPGA-479M
Technology 90nm
Voltage 0.988 v

The voltage seems to be low. I know that it should be something like 1.4v - 1.6v. I think I have seen it somewhere but I can't remember now.

Has anyone knows why and how to bring this back to where it should be? I am running Windows XP Pro, 1GB RAM, 6800 Ultra Vid card, BIOS, Chipset drivers had been updated to the latest.

TIA

That's because of speedstep. It's working fine. The speed will bump itself to maximum when it needs to. Search on the subject and you'll find my related topics.

My CPU was running hella hot. like 70c and the gpu was at 95. It would hardly EVER go above 800mhz, and then only for a second, when like a program was freaking out... And going to 2000mhz would cause the temp to go crazy high. Had a tech come out and replace cpu and mobo, but the big thing i noticed was a crazy amount of dust BETWEEN the 2 heatsink fins on the far left side of the lappy, between the cpu heatsink and the extended gpu one. I BET that was what was causing my heat problems. I think i saw another post on here that actually showed a picture. And like i found out, this poster noticed that blowing air in did NOT get the crud out. I keep mine elevated and in a nice area both at work and home, but there was STILL a TON of dust in there. It looks like you will have to take apart the lappy to get rid of it. i'd check that first.

Just disable speedstep in the bios and it will run at 2000MHz all the time.

Speed step has to be enabled or it will ONLY run at 798Mhz.

My apologies, now I can't figure out what I did to remedy that problem. My machine runs at 1998-2001 Mhz all the time, but I haven't had to mess with it since I got it.What I posted was something that I read here on the forums, written by some one with more posts than myself, guess the rep thing really is only about whoring.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I have checked my BIOS and the Speedstep is Enabled and is the default settings. But it is still reading as 798 Mhz. How can I enable it to kick in to 2000 Mhz?

TIA

Just so you know the CPU usage is dynamic so you have to be actually doing something to get it to clock up. To prevent this you go to your powermanagement scheme in either Dell QUICKSET (if you have it installed) or use the windows powe rmanagement suite and set your profile to Desktop/Always On and this should remedy the problem.

Hey Dude, thanks a lot for that. It it working so far. I just want to make sure that there is nothing wrong with my system. The speed has gone up to 1997.0 MHz, Multiplier; X15.0 and voltage has gone up to 1.356V. Thanks to all who replied to this thread. You guys are awesome.
