When i boot my laptop using the power adaptor with the battery connected i get a message in the startup saying "battery can not be identified and will not be able to charge until repalced"
If i try and uinplug the power cord the thing crashes.
in the battery meter it shows no battery present.

I searched this in google but the only site i came up with was the kind where you have to pay to get the answer. i was realy to pay then it said it must be a usa credit card. Does anyone have a membershio to that fourm?

I dont think that the battery is the problem because the post on th eother site said they replaced the battery and mo board and still didnt help.

is there some utility that i need to have inorder to charge the battery properly?
i have formated the computer a wile ago
tryed downloading some things from the dell site but nothing has worked so far?

any suggestions would be appreciated!

When you pull the AC plug and the machine crashes, that tells me that the battery is discharged or isn't being "swapped in" to replace the AC power that is going away.

Now, your battery should conform to the "smart battery" standard, which basically means that it communicates with your motherboard via a special digital protocol. Something is going wrong at this point, it seems.

Question: Have you tried booting from a boot CD or USB key (assuming your laptop can do that)? What was the result?

Question: Have you tried a cold boot into your BIOS screen, with the battery installed? If you can, go into your BIOS settings screen and keep it there for awhile (say 1 hour)--battery plugged in and AC plugged in as well. The point is to try to charge the battery while only running from BIOS, not Windows XP. Doing this makes the assumption that the problem is in Windows XP and not something lower-level. I don't have much hope for this, though. Still might be worth a try.
