Hi guys, i need help. This time its windows/linux help.
I completely formated my HDD. I then installed windows. Everything went fine until, i went to install my INTEL 915 GMA VGA card [after i installed the chipset of course].
I try to install my vga adapter and it says:
Error: The INF file does not contain information about your hardware
ANd i have tried with various INF files, and VGA drivers, and I still get teh same error. Which would lead one to beleive its a hardware issue. HOwever, when I reboot windows, it says:
Found New Hardware: Base System, VGA Adapter, PCI E device, Ethernet Controller
So it recognizes teh hardware. And im able to install the ethernet controller with no problems.
But, the weird part is, IN KUBUNTU, my VGA card IS recognized. Here is part of my XORG.CONF
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Intel Default Card"
Driver "i810"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
Modeline "1280x800@60" 83.91 1280 1312 1624 1656 800 816 824 841
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Intel Corporation Intel Default Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1280x800"
EndSubSection
So you see, it makes references to my INTEL card, plus the display doesnt look like ass as it does in windows.
In addition, under windows, my monitor is seen as the windows GENERIC one, rather than the INTEL one it used to say prior to the reformat.
So it seems like a hardware issue, but at the same time it doesnt. Since it works spiffy in linux.
Do you guys have any ideas about what's going on?
IM thinking it could be a corrupt Windows install c.d. But IDK :censored: :reallymad

maybe I'm missing something, but I think he means it works fine in linux, but not in windows, and he's wondering if anyone can help him get it working properly in windows. I read the page you linked, and I dont see anything that would help with that. Am I misundering?

I would think you just have to reinstall the correct windows driver. It doesn't sound like a hardware problem or a corrupted windows install. You just need to make sure you have the right driver for your HW. You can try your laptop's manufacturer's website and re-download the video driver there. Or, if you're sure you have the built in Intel 915 GPU then why don't you go to the Intel website and download the latest driver for your version of Windows?

To quote someone on the LAD or LAU lists, I cant remember which;)
I dont have the extraordinary knowledge needed to get Windows working right, thats why I stick in Linux, it simpler;)
Ok to be honest, it does sound like a driver problem, make sure you got the most up to date drivers etc. Also do you have another video card in your computer it may be competing with?

 got it. I did the same thing to a guy asking about screen protectors in notebook general.

You might try getting the reference driver from Intel. I used this one on my system with the 915 chipset.

Seablade, you have a very good point, about another device competing with it. I dont have a pci e device, yet it detects one in windows. Well, the INtel VGA, but that should be read as VGA right? And, i found on the itnel support page, that my error, comes up if you installed a PCI E device, on a system with INtegrated graphics. But i havent installed anything.!!!
I am using the drivers cd that asus sent with my laptop. I will try your guys suggestions and hope it works....
Keep you posted.

See if you can disable your PCI-E Bus then since you arent using it, would have to do so in your BIOS.

Sweet, than sounds like a good idea! im going to try again with teh drivers i downloaded fomr the asus site, then ill try what you said. I'm sorry guys, i'm a noob when it comes to hardware.
Man, last i remember being in my BIOS, it lacked many things, it was somewhat useless, but hell, ill look into that. Or maybe can get an updated BIOS.
I just hate installing windows, it takes so long:thumbdown

Be VERY careful if updating your BIOS, it is a bad idea unless two things are true...
A) You KNOW what you are doing. Meaning you are certain, not you are pretty sure.
B) Something is actually broken you need to fix.
Other than that, DONT DO IT! It is much to easy to confuse a digit here or there within a manufacturer's identification scheme and seriously screw yourself over to the point you can no longer even repair your computer without some soldering and a chip flasher(Meaning for 95 percent or more of people out there, their computer may as well be dead)
Figured I better post that after you mentioned not feeling to comfortable with hardware.

Man, Thanks soo much seablade. I had heard that messing with the BIOS was no "Walk in the park" so to say.
With that said. IM reinstalling windows as of now, and its almost done, so we'll see.

And, Im going to hijack my own thread while i wait for windows to install.

Ive always wanted to ask how you make money in audio? I know you work in the audio field, but what exactly do you do?
whereas this thread is entitled "giving me ass" and i am yet to see ass, here is my contribution

abf, dude, that's all we need!!!
*hurries to rename thread to : "post the best Ass pics you can find"*
:headbang:
Well, it's working now, It recognizes my vga and it works. I assume that my INF file from my drivers cd was corrupt, and if i remember correctly, i just installed the newer INF on top of the old one thats why I said that the new INF didnt work either. But now, with the reinstall of windows and the downloaded INF its all spiffy, and ready for some fraggin' action. :alienhead
It all would have been unnecessery if wine would have allowed me to play cs 1.6, just how it had always done.
Oh well.
Thanks guys.

Thanks ABF, I was at work for that one...
HehHeh
And to answer your question SpinCricket, I work as a theaterical sound designer primarily. To be honest I dont make money, or at least not much. I left computers as a field because I found it to boring and wanted to do something I enjoyed, thus I went back to audio and theater.
Though to be honest at the moment my current job has minimal audio work(Just 4 channels of audio, no mix, and 2 sends from elsewhere) as I work in opera, but more money and more name recognition for later hopefully. At the moment I am working running an Electronic Libretto System(Think Subtitles for opera on the back of each seat in multiple languages you can choose)
In the past I have worked at various places, Ill have my website done soon if I can finish beating actionscript and flash into my head, and Ill post a link for you. At least the preliminary version will be done soon, the final version with sounds etc will take another couple of weeks probably.

WOW sweetness dude!! I have heard of ELS before.
That's cool stuff. Luck with your endeavors man! Thanks for the explanation too. I always just read "i do audio" "my box is primarily for audio" so i always wondered what exactly you did. Its neat to know.
