CPU load at 100 percent

Hi,

My notebook ocassionally gets stuck in 100 percent CPU load for no apparent reason. It happens when I leave my pc on for extended periods of time/overnight for downloading. Because of this the notebook becomes hot and the fans switched on full blast. It also gets really laggy, and i have to reboot the pc.

I've tried the 'end task' for most of the programs but the load remains at 100percent.

I suspect it might be due to the norton security 2006 which i just installed recently, and i have tried uninstalling it will fix it.

Sounds malware related. Download hijackthis.exe from the net use :google: and run the report and paste the results back here I suspect youve got some serious malware action goin on.

to add to that i think o17 is not malicious. those are the 'preferred dns address' for my broadband connection.

but i think o16 is malicious. i actually scanned a virus called yazzle 2 days ago. I have removed entry 'o16' as highly recommended by the analysis from that site. tell me what u think or if i should delete any other things.

These 2 look shady but i dont see anything completely out of the ordinary. Is the problem constant or is it during specific program access? Another good way of filtering this out is to download a handy utility called Windows Defender which you can download for free at windows.com Afte ryouve downloaded and installed it run it and see all your active programs. Basically the ones that look fishy would be programs listed under lowercasing and have no official tag to it.

It normally happens when i leave it alone for extended periods of time ie at night for p2p downloading. I use bitcomet for that. I recently increased the settings in it ie 'maximal half open tcp/ip connections' from 10 to 50. Not sure if that was the cause but i have reduced the value to '10'. The strange thing is that when i find cpu load is stuck at 100%, i cant bring it back down despiting shutting all open programs, and ending task for some background programs. Even more strange is that under task manager, no single program seem to be taking too much ram. I actually have 1gb ram.

Ram wouldnt be the issue. So what your saying is whenever you have BitComet running the problem occurs? are you using there beta .68 version or something older?

I'm using the latest bitcomet software.

I had the problem again and I think I have isolated the problem. The high CPU load is coming from explorer.exe where in task manager, the value under CPU=95-98. Strangely the Mem usage is normal ie 20-30 mb. Bitcomet only had only CPU=2 and Mem usage =50 mb

When i end task explorer.exe the cpu load comes down but i cant use the pc anymore, either have to log off and log on again or restart pc to use it.

What might cause high load under explorer.exe?

thats definetly malware buddy. Install Windows Defender and time to see whats hogging up that cpu.

i ran windows defender but nothing came up during scanning. I also tried using spybot and adaware but nothing too. I'm going to try reinstalling windows xp and see if it helps
