is Cedega the only way to run games?

pretty much the only thing that is preventing me from ditching windows is gaming (and in case i have to use a college app that doesnt run on windows). can i install games on windows like hl2, doom3, or others, without using cedega, or do i need cedega?

if i do subscribe to cedega and cancel later, can i still use the programs i installed or does it remove cedega from my computer?

anyway, to answer your question. cedega is not the ONLY way, but it is probably the BEST way. WINE is taking huge steps forward and they are starting to implement a nice DirectX system which will allow you to play some games under straight up wine. When you subscribe (for a month or for a year) it pretty much allows you to connect to their website and d/l the latest version, once your subscription expires you will still be able to use the software on your computer, but NOT update it anymore.

you can also always just play linux games....i found ET to be a satisfactory replacement for CS:S

Cedega is worth a try. It's only $15. I have a bunch of games I love working very well so I highly endorse it, but I have seen others get very upset their particular game didn't work perfectly right out of the box.

Just realize you'll probably have to drop the xgl/compiz prettiness if you want other 3d apps to work.

As far as the crappy college apps, just install them in a vmware session.

i finally bit the bullet and just bought it, full year of linux games for the price of one game. im gonna install some games after work and see how it goes.

i actually got rid of the xgl prettiness a while back, i don't think its quite ready yet
