Should i have wiped the drive with special software? Does anyone know how to fix this?

The sound is coming from the hard drive. It was fine for the first few days so it's strange. When formatting to NTFS and XP Pro i didn't wipe the drive so i have decided to boot and nuke and re-install XP Pro and see if it fixes it. I've never used this software before. Will it be a better install after boot and nuking?
p.s When inserting XP Pro will i need to do a full or quick format since the hard drive will be empty anyay? I think i'm right in saying the difference between them is the full format does and error check and the quick format still does a full format but with no error checking? I suppose i better do a full format. If anyone has had a clicking noise problem with the hard drive on their acer then let us know what you did.

mean a drive in it's death throes. Or with my external drives not enough
power from the USB bus. Darik's Boot and Nuke completely clears drive by
writing 0's to every spot on the drive. That's why it takes so long. I used it on my machine to completely remove the PQ service partition. If you drive is bad it should still be under warranty. BTW, who makes your drive?
I remember reading a post awhile back in these forums about people
having issues with Toshiba drives in some Acer lappys, the Toshibas failed. My drive as came from factory is a Seagate Momentus 5400.
If you boot and nuke you should not normally have to do a slow
format when installing XP. But you might want to anyway to make sure no bad sectors etc.
