Hey, I'm considering purchasing the Ferrari 5000 for $2500 CDN but was wondering if there was any alternative 15.4" machines with similar specs or are there any new ones planned? I just don't want to spend $2500 and then 2 weeks later ATI releases an X1700 for 15.4" models. Thanks.

Generally speaking by going with one of these alternatives you will probably lose a couple of things, namely processor speed and resolution. I think most of the dual core turions have a TL-50 or the TL-56 and WXGA (1280x800) instead of WSXGA (1680x1050).
Asus Z92T (aka A6T in Europe)
MSI M675
The great thing about these is they have nvidia graphics (7600) which is wonderful for linux users.

Why do you need the Turion 64 X2? The Core Duo 2.0 is faster and uses less power - the Turion's only advantage is its cost, which isn't relevent in the Ferrari 5000. So you could just as easily go with the TM 8204 (or any of the other similarly configured C-D machines from Asus, etc.).
If you need 64-bit addressing, then you could just wait a bit for Merom - updated version of the 8200 with Merom should be out in September.
As for the Mobility X1700, the desktop version is now listed in the drivers, but the Mobility isn't. So I'd say it'll probably come out closer to the end of the year, in a few months maybe (probably timed to release alongside ATI's new Core 2 Duo mobile chipset and/or the Mobility X1900 / Mobile Crossfire).

Sorry I forgot to mention that I wanted a Merom processor. Any guesses when a decent 15.4" Merom laptop will be available in Canada?
