This is a general notice / advice for all the n00bs and users out there.

After you're done configuring your non-from-scratch distro* BUM IT! Get BUM and remove all the boot sequence stuff you don't need. This is a MUST.

Why?
See hardware below. Software is Dapper AMD64. Pre-BUM it booted in 60sec and took 202mb ram. Post-BUM it boots in 49sec and uses 165mb ram. Really these are just amazing results for an investment of 1 minute of work. And really I removed just the MOST useless stuff to me...have i removed cron (dont think i have anything setup for it anyway) and a few other fuzzy programs I would have saved even more seconds and even more ram.


*non-from-scratch is a distro you don't set up from the bones up. IE... gentoo, Arch, LFS, SourceMage are considered "from scratch", everything else like Ubuntu, SuSe, Fedora, Mandriva, etc.... is "not-from-scratch"
