Does anyone have any experience installing FreeBSD (Preferably 5.0) on this machine?
generally speaking I woudl ask why bsd and not linux, since linux has a more widespread support. However....I'd suggest just install PC-BSD and go from there...see where it takes you.

Here's the best resource I know of: http://tuxmobil.org/mobile_bsd.html
(your machine is not listed in there)
I agree with ABF, if you want some flavor of unix on your laptop bsd is probably not the best way to go.

Ive used red hat, mandrake (now mandriva), knoppix.
id like to try something more, closely related unix-like. The command line is straight forward. but its the video card that im working with. An ati radeon 9600 mobile aka the M-10.
yet another reason to stay away from BSD...there are NO ATI DRIVERS. Its really a bummer....so stick with linux where at least you have fglrx...they aren't great, but better than nothing.

slackware is pretty 'unix-like'. give it a try. Drivers from ATI's site work great with the 9700, I've heard they work well with the 9600 too.

I honestly don't understand that comment.

FreeBSD has some significant differences vs the other Linux OSes. Its no doubt more of a challenge to set up also. Plus, doing the defcon/toorcon thing, i was going to try open bsd, but decided on freebsd also.
In addition, reading the background of FreeBSD was also what attracted me to it.
you're gonna be totally lacking hardware and other support in freebsd, like i said already specifically fglrx.
if you want more of a challange, give LFS, or hell, for starters even Gentoo a try.

Well if you want to try BSD for yourself, go for it. Hardware support shouldnt really matter in that case. But like ABF said, if you are concerned about hardware support go for a version of Linux, LFS should give you plenty of challenge;)

ive heard alot aobut gentoo.
try it out....it will present a good enough linux-based challange to keep you busy (and hopefuly happy) for a long time to come
