Best Network Manager?

I haven't done a ton of research here, but I have a small problem that i'd like to resolve. I'm currently using gnome network manager, which works pretty well, but it has issues when I assign a static IP Address.

Once I do that GNM has configuration issues. Because my laptop is a development machine I need to have a static IP for my wired connection but I need a dynamic IP for my wireless connections. GNM seems to disable itself whenever I assign a static IP.

So my question is what's the best way to solve this issue and also have support for WEP enabled networks?(I know ABF has a nice setup) I'd love some suggestions. I don't need to use ndiswrapper as my card is natively supported.

actually i used to use the generic gnome network applet thing that comes with ubuntu and it worked perfectly. i updated to gnome network manager (or as ubuntu calls it network-manager-gnome) my signal has become really unstable...not noticable for browsing, but for gaming i get an interrupted connection once every few minutes...its not show stopping but annoying, especially if i am doing something mission-critical for my team (for ET) such as repairing a tank or stealing the gold crate.

That's interesting because the network applet in Dapper doesn't work for me at all. It just says there are no network devices. Which is weird because if I go to the network settings in System->Administration->Networking my devices show up just fine.

Not sure why the panel applet is having trouble.
