Hey guys, I have 2 x 512 Ram and I'm looking to upgrade. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to 2 x 1GB, but as a poor student, that might have to be a two step process

So I'm thinking of having a 1GB stick beside a 512MB stick until I can afford a second 1 GB.

I've read that you should try to have 2 of the same sticks beside eachother, but I've also noticed that some laptops sell with 1536 RAM.... so I just wanted to get an opinion on whether this is recommended or not.

thanks for any info.

1536 GB.. i'd want that both as a hdd space and as ram.

But yes, you can mix 1 GB w/ 512 MB but you'll lose dual channel

Considering you'll lose Dual channel and most apps run fine at 1GB its really no point to do so. Hold out until you can afford to upgrade both sticks.

Run some performance tests or read up and see if 1gb dual channel is better or worse than 1.5gb single channel.

in most cases the 1.5GB would be a better choice but 500MB isnt going to make or break your apps you know? if yor upgrading go for the sweet spot and double it altogether then sell the old sticks cause there is still a market for that kind of ram.
