Ok, so I just bought a VGA cable to connect my XPS M1710 and Samsung LCD. However, if I set the resolution of the laptop to 1920 x 1200, then the image of my desktop is zoomed in on the external LCD, and I have to move the mouse around to uncover the rest of the screen. However, if I set my laptop resolution to 1366 x 768 (the default resolution of my Samsung LCD), the it looks fine on the LCD, but crap on the laptop. Is there any way I can set my laptop and LCD to different resolutions (1920 x 1200, 1366 x 768), and display the same image on each screen.
Thanks.

That's exactly what you did.
However, you can't expect the same image to look the same on the LCD screen in native resolution and on the laptop in scaled resolution. That is simply physically impossible.
Well, except if you use a resolution of 2x2.... (!!!)

Can you not use the display settings in the control panel. In the settings tab you have two displays one for the internal laptop screen and one for an external screen (vga or dvi connection). Click on the screen 1 or 2 to select it.
You can extend the desktop on the external screen or use it as a copy of the laptop screen.
You can adjust the res of each display independantly.

You have to set it to DualView to allow 2 different full screen resolutions.
