Whenever I come across a .gif on a web page, my cpu usage skyrockets to 100%, and it begins to lag like hell. :scratch:
How can I fix this?

Are you using IE or Firefox? XP or Vista? Latest video drivers? What else is running?

See if these registry entries:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
"MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server"=dword:00000004
"MaxConnectionsPerServer"=dword:00000002
...have changed from 4 and 2 to something like 00000010. If so then change them back to the XP default of 4 and 2 and see if it helps.

Heres a silly question. Does the same problem occur if you use IE? and are you on Vista or Windows XP?

I used to have problems with GIFs and JPGs on the web browser, but it was a scaling problem and nothing to do with cpu overhead.
Get www.sysinternals.com Process Explorer and double click on the explorer.exe or the firefox.exe process (whichever one goes crazy on you) and keep the "threads" tab open to see if you get a hint into what's going on - it'll tell you the load of each individual thread within a process.
