I just got a Precision M50 off the bay, but I'm having trouble with the ethernet outlet.

The network card shows up okay in device manager with no problems, but when I plug in my ethernet cable, it does not recognize that it is plugged in. The light next to the plug does not turn on, etiher.

I tried swapping ethernet plugs with a working one from my Inspiron 8200, but still no luck.

If it isn't the plug and the device is showing up okay in Windows, what is my next step to troubleshoot?

Is there a LAN module somewhere on the motherboard I can swap out? I don't think so because it is soldered in, right?

Any advice greatly appreciated - thanks.

Probably it's a problem with the ethernet socket on the board. The one on the side of the Laptop is just an extension cable that goes from an 8 pin connector to the RJ45. I reckon the connector on the motherboard is the issue. Unfortunately the i8200/C840/M50 has an integrated 3Com ethernet card which is not replacable. Considering you tried an RJ 45 you KNOW works I'd reckon that its not the RJ45 itself.
