Acer 3000 boot from cd help

Hi, not great with computers but I have a decent understanding so please bear with this explanation! Ok, I was sure I had a virus so I installed AVG, ran the virus checker which sent a windows file to a 'vault' in AVG which I assumes deletes it, the laptop immediately restarted and hasn't booted to desktop since. I've put the system restore CD in but windows doesnt boot from CD and I've tried to boot it from the BIOS but that didnt work. Could someone walk me through what I should be doing, or if im doing anything wrongly or generally any ideas that might help. As far as i know if i reinstall XP it should replace the corrupt file, but its just getting to the point of being able to install it.
