dear sir,

i'm thaddeus from india. i'm getting the following configurations in ACER and DELL at great price difference. I would liket oknow from users about acer as a notebook. is it worth buying an acer or they just slow down after some time. Dell infact has a good review but i don't have any idea about acer. i've heardit's famous in the UK anyone from india maybe could put some light.

as acer laps are made in the asian production units for India so how the lap performance wise. american made, british made & asian made vary alot.

This is the configuration.

56Kbps Modem

Well I would have to see the specs on the Dell and the price range. I don't know anything about the builds of Acer in India... but my Acer in the US has been pretty reliable. I think those specs are a little light.. I would definitely go for 1 GB system memory if you can afford it. You'd want a laptop to multitask and the system memory definitely helps.

I am not sure how to answer your questions. Since I use both Dell and Acer notebooks, may be I can provide you with some useful info.

I am not sure if the location of the purchase would make any difference in where the notebooks are made or the origins of their components.

I live in the States. My Acer Ferrari 4005WLMi was made in China. My Acer TravelMate 800LCi was made in Taiwan. My current company issued Dell Latitude D610 was made in Malaysia. I doubt there is any notebook still made in US. My previous 2 Sony’s were both made in Japan and I don’t remember where my first IBM notebook was made. The point is that that all of notebooks I’ve owned seem to be well made.

Nowadays, most computer manufacturers use more of less the same components, selecting a notebook become more of a personal taste. If you do not play games, almost any current notebooks would do. Bump up the memory to 2 GB and select a notebook with a decent video card is about it. If you want a big and bright screen then don’t expect to get a long running time on battery. The more bell and whistle your notebook has the more heavy it would be. It all depends on what is important to you and then rate the notebooks yourself. The cost goes up if your want more, faster and bigger hard drives cost more. Faster processor cost more. So if money is not object, go for more, otherwise you need to balance your needs and get the most your money can buy. You are the only one that knows exactly what you want and can afford.
