View Full Version : Sudden no-boot issue with my 9200. Help-help!

I was just sitting on the couch, minding my own business, surfing Ebay for 9200 parts, and during a page transition (Internet Explorer 6) my screen froze halfway through. Ctrl+Alt+Del several times did not pop up the restart menu.
So I hit the power button.
Now when I try to power up, I get a white screen for about 8 seconds, and it shuts off the power. No noise what so ever. (Fan, hard drive, DVD ROM search...nothing)
Laptop was not excessively warm. Hard drive is a 9 month old Seagate 120GB. Tried booting with no hard drive. Can't even get the BIOS.
Uhmmmm...WTH happened?
I've been trouble free (at least this type of trouble, anyway) for two years now. What could it be?

Yeah but you overclocked your card and was messing around with it. I wasn't doing anything. I was just surfing the net.

Have you ever overclocked?

I had a similar problem with my 9300. It was the RAM. If you have two sticks of RAM, try removing one and letting it boot. Then try the other, to see if it's the RAM.

Have you ever overclocked?No- I can't. I have the Dothan 1.8GHz 400FSB, but I have the 855i chipset.

So, does this mean my RAM is faulty?
Two 1 GB sticks of Kingston PC3200.

Basically, yes. Kind of funny that it's Kingston too, I had the same problem with my Kingston memory I bought from Newegg, it was a 1Gb stick as well. Got a RMA replacement from Newegg in about a week though, but now my warranty is overwith through Newegg and I'm not sure if Kingston has a lifetime warranty or not.

Luckily Kinston is life time backed and if you got it from Newegg its even easier to get the replacement.

I did in fact get it from New Egg. Over a year ago, though.
What's the indisputable RAM tester that everyone, including Kingston or New Egg recognizes as definitive?

Ok. So should I yank one out & test them individually? Or will this tell me which one is failing?

Individual is the best way to go. For all you know you may have 2 bad sticks and not even know it. The testing process if long but its the only way to be sure.

And I can safely let the thing test overnight, or should I babysit it?

you can let it run over night since it gives you a report. 1 or 2 errors is ok if you get a whole bunch its an issue.
