View Full Version : Anyone managed to get speedstep to work in Vista yet?

I have noticed that my CPU never clocks down under Vista, even when I select Power Saver in power options. I searched the forum and found other people with this problem, but I couldn't see any posts updated more recently than a month ago (about the time that Vista first came out). Does anyone know how to resolve this issue yet? Thanks.

i heard somewhere that the processor never down clocks...it'd also be nice to know that powermizer worked. Btw how are you checking cpu speed? I8kfangui won't install for me

I am using FanGUI version 3.1 and I have disabled UAC.

Users now have a more defined control over how much the CPU clocks down using the Mobile battery control center just right click the battery ICON and adjust speedstep accordingly.

Thanks for the reply. If you are referring to the section with the default setting of minimum 5%, max 100%, this doesn't seem to work for me. Even if I try to force it run at permanently low speed by setting max 50%, the CPU still does not clock down.

I don't know if this will help with any other models. But on my 5150, if I either suspend or hibernate with the power profile set to powersave, when I resume, the processor is running at 1.6Ghz and if I switch at that point to balanced it shifts processor speed on demand. I just have to remember to always switch to powersave before each hibernation (I tend to always hibernate now rather than shut down).

The only problem I have other than this at this point is that if I suspend, I don't get any sound until I hibernate or shut down. I guess the sound card only gets initialized from the power down states and not from the suspended state.

I hope this helps others who like me cannot expect a BIOS update to make it work properly since the 5150 is considered outdated (even though I get the full Aero experience and such).

I have noticed this too...my CPU will NOT downclock, no matter what settings I have in power options....

I can only get the CPU to declock when on Battery so were all in the sameboat here.

For some reason my mine, as long as I am in a power profile that limits to a max of 50% when I resume, it downclocks initially and if I switch to balanced it adjusts the clock based on processor load. I must remember each time to set my power profile to the low power profile each time before suspending of hibernating though. I just wish I could find an easy way to set that AND hibernate with a single mouseclick or button click (logitech bluetooth keyboard I use most of the time).
