OK heres the deal. I know this has probably been covered on the forums already but I need it to be gone over again SIMPLY. I just tried to install Mandrake 9.1rc2 and it hung on the installation. I have no idea what to do and am getting fairly frustrated with linux. I hear Mandrake is easy to install but it doesn't seem that way. Maybe I'm just not ready for linux. Anyway, if anyone here could try to help me with the hanging upon installation I would really, really, REALLY appreciate it.

Wisefish, there is already the soluce somewhere on this forum.

Don't get frustrated. Linux is a real long learning process a steep curve but don't get discouraged. Linux is for everybody. It requiers time, dedication and understanding. Real understanding of your hardware and of linux 'boot process' and you will get there. Not that hard after all, but yeah need time.

1) Put your cd in , boot on cdrom in your bios
2) at the prompt type : "linux noauto noprobe nofirewire"
3) Enter
Now the install shouldn't hang. Hope that helps and at least install mandrake. You will have to upgrade your kernel to enjoy firewire.

Do you own a linux book ? heheh get one !

The same thing is happening to me. I have tired a lot suggestions such as nousb nopcmcia nofirewire noauto etc, but they did not work . I also tired alt1 too but that didn’t help either. I have also looked at some of the online guides at www.tldp.com and some other site but they have done nothing for me. The closest thing i found was a site about some guy installing linux on his sager 56xx but I have a 8887. Some people say that when mandrake version 9.1 is released it will solve this problem but then again I am not so sure it will be that easy. Linux has frustrated me sooooo much.      I am thinking of just giving up on it completely and just using Windows XP.

I feel the same way but I plan on sticking this out. I really want linux to work. I just may use CD-RW's now.
:D  :D

Hey i am so sorry this takes a bitter turn on you guys. I will really advice switching to another distro. Debian boots on the machine, so is gentoo, so is Red hat. Any body tried the latest SuSE ?

Don't give up on linux.....it is undead.
Check this for a laugh:
www.undeadlinux.com

First distro that detect any Fat32/MSDOS or NTFS partitions and delete them for you at install stating : For a better world, your windows partitions are now being deleted...

RedHat wont without some kernel commands on anaconodas start up.. and I believe you've gotta do some tweaking with gentoo as well.. Methinks its just the pcmcia thats causing the big fark.. downloading Mandrake 9.1 RC3 (mislabled supposed to be bendoo final from what i'm reading) should be done by morning, gonna give it a shot tommorrow night., Hope they fixed the world in here :>

Oh yeah, as PPS. Knoppix came out with a new cd.. xfree 4.3.0 and kde 3.1.1 good stuffs

Wait till Mandrake final comes out. There are some issues on the RC2 that I've sent to bugzilla. The firewire is causing the hang up. You should be able to get by with

Linux noauto

I believe case counts. Or try using Gentoo, the install isn't all that difficult if you follow the directions.

Hopefully the final version of msk will be like Beta 3 because everything worked beautifully in that version.

Don't bother d/l Mandrake 9.1 final release, if you were waiting for Firewire hang to be solved, or DMA on IDE controller 1. Save your ( & their) bandwidth & cdrs. It is out, fyi. It does run with the
linux noauto noprobe nousb nofirewire nocdrom novideo nohdd noaudio nousb nors232 nops2 nokeyboard noethernet nomodem

Just stick with laclasse directions, or get another distro.

acually I found no problems (execpt for the dma issue and no new radeon drivers.. bad fps)

install with "text noauto" sans qoutes. follow the install procedure, then configure X. Tell it to use the radeon driver and that you've got a flat display 1600x1200.. dont test it, go to options in the X config and tell it to start X on boot.. finish install.. reboot.. on reboot login as root, open mandrake control center, and go to hardware, Have HardDrake discover all yer hardware and configure... I've got everything working (inculding firewire) execpt the modem.. even the mini-pci card was picked up cleanly and I'm surfin over the wireless link atm.

YMMV
